BBC are Corporate-Paid Propagandists

February 14, 2012 – It has been recently reported by the Independent, that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) “will today apologise to an estimated 74 million people around the world for a news fixing scandal, exposed by The Independent, in which it broadcast documentaries made by a London TV company that was earning millions of pounds from PR clients which it featured in its programming.”

While The Independent focuses on scandals revolving around the Malaysian government, members of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak’s regime, and corporations like Microsoft, the reek of propaganda wafting off from all that BBC involves itself with has been a case study for years.

Three overtly suspect projects BBC recently backed immediately come to mind, including “Thailand: Justice Under Fire” together with “Secret Pakistan,” and “The Lady,” regarding US and British-funded Myanmar proxy, Aung San Suu Kyi. These three “works” have been exposed as overt propaganda, peddling an agenda rather than anything resembling objective documentaries. BBC’s “Secret Pakistan,” for example, literally attempted to rewrite 10 years of history where Pakistan, rather than Al Qaeda or “Bin Laden” was retrospectively made responsible for the ongoing violence in Afghanistan and the death of Western troops.

And while The Independent offers up their handful of negligible admissions regarding Malaysia, Egypt, and Microsoft, exposing how special interests compromised BBC’s “integrity,” the special interests behind other BBC “documentaries” are easily identified, granted you do not watch them in suspended disbelief, accepting everything as truthful, and fully trusting in BBC’s obviously non-existent credibility.

BBC is not only guilty of making fraudulent, deceitful propaganda dressed up as “documentaries,” but their general “reporting” is also a breathtaking daily assault on truth, objectivity, and journalistic integrity. No where can this be seen better than in BBC’s coverage of the events in Egypt and Libya last year, and in particular illustrated in an excerpt from February 2011′s “Libya Conquered in the Dark: BBC’s Breathtaking Propagandizing:”

Unlike in Egypt, where US International Crisis Group trustee Mohamed ElBaradei was talking daily to international reporters on the ground, and AlJazeera provided 24 hour coverage, Libya is a virtual blackhole. The mainstream media is relaying hearsay from “Libyan” bloggers and protesters on the ground. The tell-tale quotation marks peppering reports coming out of BBC and AlJazeera and a litany of weasel words indicate that the “revolution” will be feed to the public in the most disingenuous and unsubstantiated manner possible.

Unfortunately, when all we have to depend on during a crisis is the honor of the corporate owned media, where BBC itself is a major corporate member of the globalist nexus Chatham House, nothing can be trusted and we are left in confusion and uncertainty. Far too many people, however, will still fall for the thin veneer of legitimacy the mainstream media’s slick graphics and well-dressed shills lend it.

BBC’s latest article regarding Sayf al-Islam’s address to the nation gives us an astounding example of the mainstream media forcing the scant facts coming out of Libya into a predetermined narrative to suit the global-combine’s interests. In his address to the Libyan nation, Sayf al-Islam accused opposition groups and outsiders of trying to transform Libya, that the foreign media was grossly exaggerating the government’s response to protesters, and compared the unrest to an Egypt-style Facebook revolution.

While BBC concedes that “verifying information from Libya has been difficult,” within the text of the article they refer to the speech as a “rambling TV address.” In the side bar, we hear from BBC propagandist Jon Leyne, who covered the “bazillion-gagillion man march” in Egypt and told viewers it seemed as if “all of Egypt” had turned out in Tahrir Square. Best estimates of the crowd range from 50,000 to no more than 100,000 (0.1% of Egypt’s population.) Leyne says the following regarding Sayf al-Islam’s address, in an unprofessional bravado we should only have come to expect from the BBC:

“That was one of the strangest political speeches I think I’ve ever sat through. He was completely and utterly detached from the reality of what is going on in his country. To put it bluntly, most Libyans will just treat it as gibberish – it was completely meaningless to them. The idea that they’re somehow going to sit down and have a national dialogue with a government that’s brought in foreign mercenaries to shoot at them is laughable.”

What qualifies Leyne to speak on behalf of the Libyan people on a crisis his own network concedes is difficult to report on, thus “utterly detached” themselves, is beyond understanding, unless of course it is pure propaganda aimed at discrediting the address.

What the mainstream media and Sayf al-Islam seem to agree on is that Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi has been overrun by mobs who have seized military tanks and weapons. For BBC and AlJazeera to call the government’s response to arsonists, looters, vandals, and now dangerously and overtly armed mobs, a “massacre,” seems somewhat disingenuous and very similar to their coverage of the US-backed mobs that took to the streets in Bangkok in May, 2010.

While BBC’s recent outing as a corporate-paid propaganda operation may seem to many as a simple statement of the obvious, it will hopefully begin to undermine the unquestioned credibility many still seem to believe these large corporate-media outfits possess. It will also hopefully spur many to begin researching, discovering, and attempting to understand the world around them, themselves, without the corporate-paid propagandists guiding them along.

If Thomas Jefferson was correct when he stated, “an informed citizenry is the only true repository of the public will,” one must wonder where the public will is currently reposited so long as the citizenry is “informed” by corporate-paid propagandists like the BBC.

A Day in the Life of a Cannabis Cafe Worker

I guess we all have a good idea about what we would call our “ideal job” and I’m sure that some of you reading this would totally agree that working in a cannabis café would be pretty ideal. I mean, imagine being able to go to work every day, smoke some damn fine cannabis, meet some really interesting people, and be part of a great community? Well this is my story……….

Back in the spring of 2002, life was hectic for me. I was just a normal housewife, with a great hubby and four fantastic sons and my days were filled with the normal day to day things that any other housewife experienced. It was a Thursday morning, and I was browsing my local paper, when I came across an article. It was about this guy who had opened a head shop in the town centre. He was quoted as saying that he wanted to open a Dutch style cannabis café at the rear of the shop, but couldn’t do that because of the draconian laws surrounding cannabis in this country. I remember saying to Keith, my husband, what a great idea I thought it was, and so I decided to write a letter to the local paper to show my support for this man. To cut a long story short, my letter was printed and I got on with my life.

A good friend of ours, who has since passed away, came to visit a few weeks later, with some of the best herbal cannabis that I had ever smoked, and he suggested that I paid a visit to the new head shop in town. And so it was, a couple of weeks later, I met the man who was to change my life in a huge way. His name was Chris Baldwin and during our first conversation I discovered that he had been a candidate in the previous General Election for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (now re-named CLEAR). Chris had such a vision – he wanted to see cannabis cafes on the streets of every town in the UK and I totally shared his vision. I had been a cannabis user for many years, and although I was a recreational user, I definitely could understand how cannabis could be used as a great alternative medicine.

The head shop, named Bongchuffa, was situated in Worthing, West Sussex. It was tucked away in a great road, with plenty of other businesses, just like you would find on any high street in any town. And it was just like any other head shop – shelves with bongs, pipes and smoking accessories, smoking papers etc. But that was where the similarity stopped. A door led from the shop front to a back room, and oh what a back room it was! It looked a bit like an artists studio – some incredibly talented artists were decorating the walls and ceiling. There were a few old tables and chairs around, the lighting was dim and some fine music was playing. And then there was a smell of fine cannabis… Chris offered me to join him and his friends for a smoke, so of course I accepted. It would have been rude not to! Chris told me that he had seen my letter in the local paper and was wondering when I would put in an appearance – to be honest I wished I had done it sooner….

We chatted for a while, and it became apparent to me that Chris was intending to open an illegal cannabis café in Worthing. Without thinking twice, I offered my help and support and left feeling a little wobbly to say the least. When I went home and told Keith, he was understandably a little cautious, but all the same he was very intrigued. During the next fortnight, I visited Bongchuffa on numerous occasions, making teas and coffees, meeting some great people and learning more and more about Chris’s vision. Things were progressing well in the “back room”. The walls were virtually filled with all different kinds of art, a wall had been built to separate the front shop from the back, and in the corner a lovely wooden dealer’s booth was being built. It truly did have the feel about it that many Dutch Coffeshops have. By this time my husband had also visited a few times, and plans were made to build a coffee bar with seating for around thirty people. It was also wheelchair accessible which would prove to be invaluable as time went on.

I’m not quite sure of the date that it happened, but one day, the coffee shop announced that it would be opening to the public, and adopted its name – Quantum Leaf. Opening hours were to be 11am – 6pm and none of us really knew what we were letting ourselves in for. Chris always said that he expected Quantum Leaf to be closed down on Day 1 but that wasn’t to be. During the early days, most people who entered through the door and walked down the short tunnel to Quantum Leaf simply could not believe their eyes. The first thing that met people was a dealer’s booth, complete with menu, which sometimes had as many as ten different types of weed, and up to five types of hash. Their deals were ten English pounds each, and depending on what variety you had, you would get a very fair and reasonable weight. A system was introduced whereby sales were restricted to four bags per day per customer, which is probably just as well, because we were always running out and having to send out for more supplies. The coffee bar was well stocked with teas, coffees, cold drinks, biscuits and snacks. It soon became apparent that people also wanted to purchase space cakes. We obliged by providing them with muffins priced at two English pounds, cookies priced at one English pound, and for special occasions, a box of handmade Cannachocs, priced at five English pounds.

My day usually started at around 9.30am when, on arrival with another lady, we would clean the premises and ensure that everything was ready for the 11am opening. The cannabis was kept in a safe house, and would arrive in fairly small amounts, just before opening time. There were a few volunteer dealers, who would usually work two or three hour stints in the dealer’s booth. It was a very enviable job! The coffee bar was similarly staffed, with staff earning two bags of weed or hash for each shift that they worked.

I should have mentioned previously, but alongside this coffee shop venture, Chris Baldwin and his friend and carer, Trevor Smith were also involved with a medical cannabis distribution service called THC (The Herb Connection) A lot of THC patients were local Worthing people and would often come in to Quantum Leaf to collect their medicine. I will never forget the first time that I met a young guy, only in his twenties, who had one of the worse cases of MS that I had ever seen. What was so great to watch was how his uncontrollable shaking stopped after just one or two pipes of high grade cannabis. Another lovely lady in an electric wheelchair, who had been struck with a crippling illness a few years earlier, would come in most days, stay for coffee and a chat, and at the same time medicate herself so that she was well and able to enjoy her days,

When 6pm came, it would be time to reflect on the day, and believe me, each day that passed there was more and more reflection to be done. Many of the local shop owners remarked upon how their business was booming, especially the food outlets and tobacconist, which to me indicated that there really was a need for cannabis cafes within our communities and society in general. Not one of our neighbouring shop owners ever complained about us being there.

The local newspaper put out an appeal for shopkeepers to donate to the Worthing Christmas Lights appeal, and they happily accepted our donation. A party for 30 children, mostly the kids of adults who visited Quantum Leaf, was held at a local soft ball park, Father Christmas visited the kids with a great present for each of them, and Quantum Leaf was opened especially for the parents to go and have coffee a smoke and relax for a while, safe in the knowledge that their children were happy and being cared for.

Of course, it was not all sunshine and light, and obviously the bubble had to burst at some time, but none of us knew when this would be. Local soap bar dealers heard about the place, and we received threatening phone calls saying that they were coming to rob us. This didn’t happen, but trust me, there were many, many people who wanted to be involved who had very few scruples or morals, but that’s another story.

Quantum Leaf finally closed its doors on December 25^th 2002, but not before it provided Christmas Lunch for many homeless people from the area. Those were a really busy six months or so for me, but ones that I will never forget. Would I do it again? You bet I would!

Today in Greece tens ofthousands, possible hundreds of thousands of its people have taken tothe streets, In Athens it is estimated that more than 50,000 peoplecrowded the streets around Syntagma Square where running battles withthe police continued well after dark. So while the expensive suits, without consultingthe people, sit in the parliament building trying to do a deal withthe devil, heaping more misery on the heads of the Greek people, thepeople have been on the streets telling them that deal or no dealthey will not accept any more deprivation to protect the wealth ofthe bankers.

We should all be out demonstrating in solidarity with the Greek people, what is happening to them is no less than the sacrifice of a people on the alter of bankers greed. Greece is being turned into a third world country and there is no guarantee that it will not come over here. Portugal, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Romania, and Hungary are all teetering on the brink, and when the chips are down the bankers will have no qualms about doing to the rest of Europe, what they are now doing to Greece.

It was also interesting watching the BBC sixo'clock news, and thinking of a previous post, true to form, the main item and the longest spot went to the death ofan American singer Whitney Houston, with Greece and what is happening there a verybrief second spot.

Since writing this I have learnt that there are several banks on fire across Athens. How far will the bankers push the rest of the people in Europe??

Why Cannabis Should Be Legalised and Regulated in the UK in 2012

The cannabis campaign is growing in the UK. More and more people are becoming aware that the Government/tabloid newspaper view that cannabis is a dangerous drug and causes mental health problems is based on propaganda and bad science. New scientific studies and medical testimonies are showing that cannabis actually has a multitude of benefits, although this does not get nearly as much press coverage as the odd pseudo-study claiming that cannabis is somehow bad for you.

The are an estimated six million cannabis users in the UK, a number which will undoubtedly continue to grow. Sir Richard Branson when asked if he had taken drugs recently claimed (addressing mps) that: “50% of my generation have smoked cannabis… 75% of my children’s generation smoked cannabis.” He is the face of an organisation of influential people that are currently campaigning for a more sensible policy towards drugs.

In the UK we live in a society where from a very young age we are warned about the dangers of drugs – we are told how drugs can mess up your life and send you into a spiral of addiction that will have you stealing from your family and living in your own filth. Yet we are not educated about the different levels of danger for each drug, rather just warned to avoid them altogether.

People call cannabis a gateway drug, yet what did they expect to happen:

Children are taught that drugs are dangerous, but most of the facts are left out. They are told to avoid them.
Children sometimes rebel – they might try a bit of cannabis with their mates, and will then realise it’s not such a bad thing. The adults lied.
They get their cannabis from a drug dealer. This dealer happens to be a bit older, but doesn’t care who he sells to. He’s in it for the profit alone. One day, he offers them some harder drugs. They don’t know anything about them, but hey, they were lied to about cannabis. What is to say they weren’t being lied to about everything else?

So the gateway to harder drugs theory is a product of prohibition, and cannot be blamed on cannabis itself. The majority of people who drink don’t use drugs, because they are not legal and readily available. This shows that if regulated, cannabis would not cause a rise in the number of people trying using other drugs, as it would be separated from a market where they were often sold together.

Here are some of the reasons that cannabis should be legalised and regulated in the UK in 2012:

The Dangers of Alcohol – The Government-Approved Alternative
OK, so we are warned to drink in moderation by television ads and writing on bottles, but that doesn’t stop people getting paralytic on a Friday/Saturday nights when they go out. We are the binge drinking capital of the Europe, and alcohol is a dangerous drug. The scary thing is that people don’t seem care, and many abuse their bodies by drinking far too often, leading to many proven health problems.

drinkaware.co.uk states that: “Either on its own or in conjunction with other factors, alcohol is estimated to be responsible for at least 33,000 deaths in the UK each year.”

Alcohol addiction is a big problem, and the site also states that: “More than one in 25 adults are dependent on alcohol, and the UK has one of the highest rates of binge drinking in Europe. An estimated 17 million working days are lost each year due to people missing work due to the effects of alcohol. In young adults, binge drinking is also associated with a range of risky behaviours, including a higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted illness”

How many fights every weekend can be attributed to alcohol? I’d estimate about 99% of them. How often do you wake up after a night of heavy drinking unaware of some of the events from the night before? Alcohol, for the most part turns people into dick-heads, its plain fact. Have you ever been sober around a group of pissed people? It’s not fun.

Cannabis on the other hand, makes people chilled out and happy. It brings people together. The other day I shared a few spliffs with the man who came in install my new TV Ariel. He was safe as houses – a complete stranger. Can you imagine what the country would be like if instead of going out and getting pissed at the weekend, people had the option to go to cannabis coffee shops to enjoy their evening in a much safer way? Maybe alcohol-related deaths would even drop as people would have a legal and safer alternatives so would not feel as compelled to drink themselves into a stupor. NHS costs may even drop if more people smoked than drunk, as levels of violence and domestic abuse would be reduced.

Yet the government still approves alcohol, while demonising cannabis, which has zero reported deaths directly related to its use in the history of mankind! And as far as irrational reports claiming that cannabis can be linked to schizophrenia (When in fact cannabis smokers have sharply rose in number over the past 15 years with levels of schizophrenia staying stable or even declining) – Alcohol has proven health risks, both mental and physical associated with it. Many alcohol users don’t even consider alcohol a drug, when its levels of danger including that of dependence are up there with the strongest and most despised of the illegal drugs.

Amalgams = The Number One Source of Mercury Exposure

Dental amalgams are the primary source of mercury exposure in Americans. A single dental amalgam filling releases as much as 15 micrograms of mercury per day. The average individual has eight amalgam fillings and could absorb up to 120 micrograms of mercury per day. For comparison, eating mercury-tainted seafood will expose you to about 2.3 micrograms per day — and that is enough for scientists to call for a worldwide warning!

Unfortunately, while many have become well aware of the dangers of environmental mercury contamination, few are as well-informed when it comes to the dangers posed by dental amalgams.

Sadly, only one in four people is aware that silver amalgams contain mercury, and the dental industry is capitalizing on that ignorance. Part of the problem is that the very name “silver fillings” seems to imply they are made of silver, a misdirection that has kept a good majority of consumers in the dark for a long time. Alas, amalgams consist of more than50 percent mercury. When confronted about this, the industry response is that the term “silver” is meant to denote the color, not the constitution…

However, dentists have also been actively persuaded to keep this information under tight wraps, and they are under no obligation whatsoever to inform their patients about the mercury content of amalgam fillings. As recently as 2009, the FDA ruled that no warning shall be issued to patients—not even to young women and parents of young children—that the mercury from the amalgam fillings is a reproductive toxin and a neurotoxin, despite the fact that pregnant women and young children are at greatest risk from mercury toxicity.

The name of Private Bradley Manning - a U.S. soldier accused of passing classified material to the whistle blowing website Wikileaks has consistently made it into the headlines, mostly in connection with his trial. But now his name is now on a different list - that of over 200 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. His nomination was put forward by the parliamentary group called "The Movement" in the Icelandic Parliament. One of its members Birgitta Yonsdottir says Manning deserves the nomination because it's not a crime to blogger-whistle on war-crimes.

Beachcombing, like many aging ideologues, can no longer bring himself to care about things that used to give his teenage self heartburn. But, there are a few exceptions – identity cards, Brussels delenda est, reptile road-crossing tunnels… – that buzz him into life. Not least among these and particularly associated in his mind with this blog is his rabid enthusiasm for the public domain: the wonderful meadows of books, music and increasingly films that have fallen out of copyright and that thus belong to no one and so to everyone.

In the past the fact that Virginia Woolf or Charles Darwin or Basil Rathbone in the Scarlet Claw had slipped out of copyright affected very few people. At best it would allow cheaper producers to put marginally cheaper products on the market. But now with the internet it means that you can watch a film or read a book for free.
Two things get in the way of this revolution. The first, is the incompetence of Google with their own digital shenanigans: something that Beachcombing raved about on these pages on a rainy Sunday what seems like a year ago. And second there are the attempts on the part of the state (here, there and everywhere) to tighten or lengthen copyright laws.

Beachcombing should say here that he is no enemy of copyright laws per se: he lives in a house paid for in large part by these things – at least the kitchen, the tortoise enclosure and the downstairs toilet with its rusty filing cabinets. He loves the notion of private property and recently started a fire with split-spine copy of Das Kapital written in an unidentified Slavic language. But he has despaired at the way that ‘the industry’ in the US and the EU in Europe have pushed reasonable limits into unreasonable ones.

The greatest catastrophe here was the decision by the EU in the late 1990s to have a uniform copyright law rather than allowing individual countries to follow their own laws: typical Neo-Gaullist nonsense. And not only to have a single copyright law but to borrow the worst of the lot, Germany’s with its seventy-year-after-death limit! The irony of this was that Germany rarely enforced its copyright law: a relict from the First World War when there had been a misguided but understandable attempt to protect the families of authors killed in that conflict. The result of this new uniformity, that is now enforced, is, instead, that in some cases books written in 1850 are still in copyright in 2012! Insanity…

There are far more sensible solutions: one would be an automatic ten-year copyright that can be renewed up to six or seven times, each time for a decade, by the author rather than the publishing house. For those authors who earned money – very few – and needed the money, they, and their families, would be protected. Most though would just let copyright fall away after ten or twenty years. The state could even lick its tax-consuming lips and charge authors ten dollars to reassert their claim.

But this is not going to happen and Beachcombing wants to recommend the following post to his readers and passing google spiders as the best practical way forward. Beach particularly liked point five: and dreams of giving his writings as a dubious present to the world on his death bed.

“Disconnected” for 90 Days -– Young Man Finds Real Connection

Imagine if you suddenly had many hours of new-found time each day and could have more meaningful connections with true friends? Even enough to find love? A wish come true? Jake Reilly had no idea he would find this and more with his “Amish Project.”

Reilly noticed most people's real love affair, their only quality time, was poured over gadgets and profiles. When he and his roommates had some out-of-town friends over for football, every single one of them was on a laptop or texting, with no one talking. “...this was what we were all looking forward to and we're just sitting here numbing our minds,” he said.

For three full months, October to December '11, Reilly lived life without any social media, texts, emails and cell phone activity. He quit his phone and computer cold turkey, set an email auto responder and began his journey.

After a difficult start, e-withdrawals, it didn't take Reilly long to figure out how to communicate outside the realm of electronics. He wrote letters and visited friends – it became fun. With so much new-found time, his productivity soared and his coursework grades improved. He enjoyed riding his bike to visit people.

He felt more awareness and had more time to read. The Power of Now especially helped him during his social media fast.

When deciding to quit social media, people's biggest fear is “Won't I become isolated?” Yes! Initially. People who he had thought were friends dropped away and the real ones met him where he was, often returning his handwritten correspondence. His project demonstrates that real isolation is the false feeling of connection in virtual reality. When he shifted, he found real friendship.

He makes the point that what others think is intentionally fun downtime spent surfing, facebooking, tweeting, and texting is actually time unintentionally lost in a “blackhole.” He says he'd rather create real memories, and won't think back gratefully on hours spent conquering Angry Birds.

When he uses social media now, he is aware of how he is using his time. He catches himself before sending a text during a real social gathering.

When asked what the difference is in level of thought and feeling put into letter writing, versus the standard social media 140 characters, he responded:

What we do now, on e-chat, is people just flying off with whatever comes to mind. It's so much different to have it really thought-out. I'm a writer, so it's time consuming. I think it takes 20 minutes or half an hour to write a letter and really get it the way I want it. I think it's a better, purer way to communicate. People appreciate it so much more when you send them a handwritten letter or even a thank-you note showing that you're taking the time to think about them.

Jake had had a longtime girlfriend, who, during the beginning of the experiment he was no longer seeing. Maybe this period gave him time to reflect about the relationship -- they somehow found each other again. The time previously lost in cyberspace, he found for her and made thoughtful loving gestures. The two spent time really being together, connecting.

It stands to reason, that a social experiment like this can improve anyone's life. Especially considering that Facebook depression is now an accepted medical and psychological term! His social experiment pulled him out of comparing his life with the appearance of others' Facebook activity.

Many of our readers' comments have encouraged others to take back their lives by throwing out the TV and getting offline to reconnect with real people. Perhaps shortly, a new revolution will counter the technology age as we leave the false connections of cyberland in droves. We'll remove the wires, ignore the signals, and return to real human connection: face to face, hand to hand, voice to voice, letter to letter.

Magic Antidepressants

Continued studies on the effect magic mushrooms have on the brain are showing that psilocybin, the active ingredient of psychedelic mushrooms, affects key parts of the brain in ways that relate to depression and anxiety disorders.

Robin Carhart-Harris, a post-doc in neuroscience at Imperial College London, and lead author of the studies on psilocybin's therapeutic effects, says that psychedelics can lift people away from negative modes of thinking, especially for those who suffer from depression. So far, the results from experiments with volunteers have supported this theory. Ten subjects reported that recalling happy memories was a much more "vivid, visual, and happy" experience with psilocybin as opposed to without.

"The brain's doing a lot to keep our experiences of the world orderly and constrained," says Carhart-Harris. The parts of the brain that try to structure our perception of the world, keeping it rational and safe, are suppressed by psilocybin, resulting in vivid emotional experiences. These areas of the brain function differently in people that have mental health issues such as depression, hence the speculation that the drug may be useful in treating mental illness.

In another study, 30 volunteers underwent brain scans in an MRI machine while under the influence of psilocybin. The brain scans showed less activity in the posterior cingulate cortex, which is thought to have a connection to consciousness and ego, and is hyperactive in people with depression.

Less brain activity was not what the researchers expected to find. The fantastical nature of psychedelic trips has always been attributed to overactive brain activity. It's not surprising that misinformation still surrounds the field - serious psychedelic research was shut down during the 60s, a time when psychedelic culture was a national scare.

Fortunately, recent studies such as this allow for psychedelics to be given serious consideration. Other small studies found improvements in people who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as improved mood and lessened anxiety in cancer patients.

The experiences are not uniformly positive - 39% reported anxiety and fear. There are trained monitors that stay with the subjects to lessen any negative reactions.

Still, research continues, and Carhart-Harris plans to answer the question of whether psilocybin does significantly help the symptoms of depression.

New Year, New Smoke – Tobacco Alternatives

I thought for this month, I’d have a change from my usual rant about prohibition and negative attitudes by the public towards Cannabis.

Instead and in light of the festive season, as many will be making new year’s resolutions to quit smoking.

(Then in all likeliness, becoming disappointed and angry at themselves if they don’t keep to it)

Partially inspired by CLEAR’s TOKEPURE campaign and my wife’s determination for us both to quit smoking tobacco, I thought it might be nice to look at some tobacco alternatives (As well as how they complement the weed I smoke them with).

Being a Wiccan and a herbalist I have a vast array of different herbs growing in my garden and have made a few legal smoking blends of my own in the past, and have experimented with quite a range, from wormwood, to mint (mint is actually incredibly nice and can make the nastiest, harshest blend quite pleasant).

However for ease of obtainability, let’s look at a few available for sale on the high street.

Tobacco free cigarettes and rolling mixes

The following examples were bought from our local Holland and Barretts.

Honeyrose special, are available in cigarette form, also in menthol or as a rolling medium.

The first time I tried Honeyrose blend, a friend of mine had come over to share a smoke and wanted my thoughts on the replacement he’d found for tobacco.

I’m not sure what weed he’d mixed with it, but the flavour was intensified by the light herbal taste of this blend. I’m not usually one for anything containing rose petals and as such this made me sceptical, however my scepticism was short lived and I was pleasantly surprised by this, as it was somewhat more subtle than blends I’d tried in the past.

An aromatic mixture made from a blend of natural herbs matured in honey and apple juice. Guaranteed tobacco free and nicotine free.

Honeyrose special rolling blend £5.85 25g pouch. Also available in 50g tins.

Honeyrose Special, tobacco free herbal cigarettes, £2.95 per 20. Tar 5mg Nicotine 0. (These are my Mrs’ favourite)

Honeyrose classic herbal cigarette, made from a blend of herbs including Marshmallow, Red Clover and Rose. Guaranteed tobacco free and nicotine free.

These are very nice just as an alternative to cigarettes, but for those who like to use the “toasting” method; this really releases the flavour before mixing with your favourite herb.

The consistency of the herbal mix also makes it very good for making a nice dry mix to enjoy on a bong.

NTB Herbal cigarettes, £2.85 per 20. Tar 3mg Nicotine 0 (I really like these ones).

NTB are made from a blend of hazelnut, papaya, peppermint & eucalyptus, and give a lovely herbal aroma and taste. NTB cigarettes were designed to be a substitute for your tobacco habit of lighting and inhaling and because these cigarettes contain no tobacco or nicotine, they do far less damage to you than tobacco cigarettes.

These can cause a little confusion amongst people in the street as they smell subtly like certain illegal herbs that we all know and love.

Since trying NTB I now generally use it as a base to most of the spliffs I build, as I find the flavour perfectly complements the weed, with none of the pungent floweriness that can sometimes be found with Honeyrose.

Both NTB and Honeyrose are also available in menthol varieties too.

It is advised to note that while these are interesting alternatives to tobacco, like tobacco the safety warnings should be observed; it is advised that you use as a part of a plan to stop smoking and you should not smoke these herbal cigarettes regularly for more than three months.

Shisha

A classic, and let’s face it, there are times when you just can’t beat a good hookah pipe, shisha has recently come under scrutiny with its effects on health being debated, however as most shisha’s are now tobacco free anyway I thought I’d suggest my favourites, made with 100% molasses and no tobacco whatsoever, they are fruity, light and full of flavour.

Add some mary jane to the mix and you have a smoke that is heavenly and a sheer pleasure to smoke.

Soex Herbal Hukka £2 – 4 (approx dependent on where bought)

I can only describe it as being like intangible candy floss, as it seems good enough to eat (my mother actually does eat it) but yet in smoke form, the smoke is thick yet light and really brings out a taste sensation whenever mixed with Cannabis.

On a personal note I would recommend avoiding the pineapple as I found it really tastes more like cheese than pineapple and this is incredibly off-putting and quite sickly. Not to mention a terrible waste if you’ve mixed your weed in with it.

El Rosha, Herbal Shisha Molasses. £3 – 6 (dependant on where bought and size of box)

Like Soex, El Rosha also offer a variety of flavours; Double Apple, Strawberry, Mixed Fruit, Mint, Pineapple, Blueberry, Raspberry, Banana, Watermelon, Grape, Mango, Kiwi, Cherry, Orange, Blackberry, Lemon & Mint, Pomegranate, Plum, Rose, Vanilla, Cola, Bubble Gum, Peach, Liquorice and Sweet Lemon.

El Rosha is slightly stronger in flavour than Soex and as such, can be either pleasant or occasionally overpowering, depending on your shisha to weed ratio. If it’s the weed flavour you’re after then you may have to use slightly more with this brand, or select a flavour which particularly complements the Cannabis, such as apple or mint.

Well hopefully I’ve given you enough food for thought as it were, all that remains is to say, keep fighting the good fight, and here’s to a merry festive season and a tobacco free New Year.

The Pirate Bay Moves to .SE Domain To Prevent Domain Seizure

After the court case against the founders of The Pirate Bay was concluded today, the operators of the site quickly moved to change their domain name from .ORG to the Swedish .SE. A Pirate Bay insider informed TorrentFreak that this move was made to prevent the US authorities from seizing the domain, which is a serious risk now the court case has completed.

Earlier today Sweden’s Supreme Court announced its decision not to grant leave to appeal in the long-running Pirate Bay criminal trial.

This means that the prison sentences and fines against the defendants are now final. The Pirate Bay website itself, however, wasn’t part of the trial and will remain operational as normal. That is, unless the US Government chooses to intervene.

In 2010 it was reported that both The Pirate Bay and MegaUpload barely escaped a domain seizure. Although it wasn’t entirely clear at the time, one of the assumptions was that in the case of The Pirate Bay the pending trial against several people involved with the site acted as a roadblock.

Today this last barrier was removed. And with MegaUpload also out of the way, the largest torrent site on the Internet is now a prime target for a domain seizure.

The people running The Pirate Bay are aware of this risk and quickly redirected the site to a Swedish .se domain, outside the reach of US authorities. A Pirate Bay insider confirmed this morning that this was done “just in case ICE has been waiting for the court case to be over.”

Along with the domain change The Pirate Bay team delivered a defiant message.

“2012 is the year of the storm. The Pirate Bay will reach an age of 9 years. Experiencing raids, espionage and death threats, we’re still here. We’ve been through hell and back and it has made us tougher than ever,” they begin.

“Our 3 friends and blood brothers have been sentenced to prison. This might sound worse than it is. Since no one of them no longer lives in Sweden, they won’t go to jail. They are as free today as they were yesterday,” they note, adding:

“In this year of the storm, the winners will build windmills and the losers will raise shelters. So flex your muscles, fellow pirates, and give power to us all! Build more sites! More nets! More protocols! Scream louder than ever and take it to the next level!”

Although it’s clear that The Pirate Bay lost a battle today, the above statements signal that the war is far from over.

The Halfway Point

It's Candlemas - no, not the Swedish Doom Metal band - and Groundhog Day. Both celebrations refer to the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox; this date has been celebrated under different guises since ancient times:

Candlemas primarily focuses on Jesus’ early life. Many Christians believe that Jesus’ mother Mary presented him to God at the Temple in Jerusalem after observing the traditional 40-day period of purification (of mothers) following his birth. According to a New Testament gospel, a Jewish man named Simeon held the baby in his arms and said that he would be a light for the Gentiles (Luke 2:32). It is for this reason that this event is called Candlemas.

Many people believe that some of Candlemas’ activities stem from pagan observances such as Imbolc [also known as St. Brigid's Day], a Gaelic festival, or the Roman feast of Lupercalia. However, others have argued that there is too little evidence to shed light on Candlemas’ substitution for these festivals. Either way, Candlemas occurs at a period between the December solstice and the March equinox, so many people traditionally marked that time of the year as winter’s “halfway point” while waiting for the spring.

Lupercalia was an ancient festival; its celebration continued after the founding of Rome in 753 BCE. It was: "one of the most ancient of the Roman holidays (one of the feriae listed on ancient calendars from even before the time Julius Caesar reformed the calendar)." Lupercalia is also now associated with Valentine's Day; it referred to February as a period of spiritual cleansing. It was a sort of early spring cleaning of the soul. It demanded reexamination of one's actions and an expulsion of evil spirits. The Romans fashioned the date as a wolf festival: Lupa was the wolf that suckled the infant twins Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome. The details of the Lupercalia celebration - which you can read about here - were pretty weird. They make our modern Candlemas rituals and Groundhog Day festivities look nice and tame. Even so, the underlying message of all these holidays is identical.

The American movie Groundhog Day (1993), while ostensibly about the modern North American convention of watching a groundhog come out of hibernation, plainly depicted the ancient themes around this day. In the film, a weatherman covering the Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania Groundhog Day celebration becomes trapped in a time loop and is unable to move forward until he changes his priorities and values for the better. In 2006, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States National Film Registry.

Incidentally, according to StormFax Weather Almanac, the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, only predicts the early arrival of an early spring correctly 39% of the time. His success rate is pretty much in line with the success rates of other groundhogs employed for these purposes in the USA and Canada. Punxsutawney Phil's official Website is here.

MARKETING is defined as "the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising."

Well, if there's NOTHING TO SELL to the 'punter' on a Free Planet, what's the point in employing people to market 'some inferior product' to them for private profit?

Absolutely none.

And we can extrude this out of the incestuous Buyer/Seller back-bedroom into the open sewer of DOGMAS and DOCTRINES.

No longer will 'supposed' organised religion be able to hammer home their insane theories of how their corporate world should work in the classrooms of the mind-crippled masses, the god-carroted donkeys of social programming.

No longer will politicians be able to spend barrowloads of (their own or others') money to make their 'election' as ruler appear somehow worthwhile.

No longer will ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH and UNETHICAL products, gadgets and quantum technological advances (i.e. a miniscule update rather than real advancement) be shoved down the punter's throat every three years of every human's life.

So, in the Free Planet future, you will not be looking through a tiny window slit of screen acrage left by the infiltration of insidious online advertisement strategies - whatever th'Internet physically becomes, and I say this with a northern accent - th-Internet will be a full-screen virtuality of Creativity, Passion and Kinship as it was always intended to be. A place where TRUTHs are SHAREd with YOU THE PEOPLE.

In our Free Planet future, there will be no Commercial Competition to Maximise Return and no Commercial Advantage from Corporate Espionage in the name of Patent/Copyright Protection. There will only be that desire, that personal empowerment, to "Do right by Free Planet," and (together, as seven billion sovereign individuals) make this profit-ruined homeworld a better place. Get rid of marketing and you get rid of the desire to constantly out-Jones the Joneses.

It's dead simple, really.

Q. Why are such research documents -- Which Path to Persia? or "String of Pearls" -- made public on the Web? If these are in fact strategic and provide a view into the world powers that run the show on our globe, why would they allow such "sensitive" information and "plans" to be made public for everyone to read?

It works in layers -- papers like "Which Path to Persia?" being toward the top are aimed at people who believe in global governance and globalization -- professors, senior editors, CEOs etc. who falsely believe they have a stake in the process -- and while it is made public, it is generally inaccessible to the average reader because of its use of academic English, length, and very high minimal requirements in understanding the history, strategy, geopolitics, and human nature necessary to understand the contents.

On Brookings' own website you will also see their policy makers pen articles & op-eds for newspapers, sufficiently dumbed-down, in plainer English, and with noticeably more spin in place of the straightforward frankness of pieces like "Which Path to Persia?" Consider Kenneth Pollack, co-author of "Which Path to Persia?," then penning this fluff piece, "Iran's Covert War Against the US" for the Daily Beast.

Below that, is your corporate-media propaganda which is almost entirely useless and also the most widely viewed by the greatest number of people. Those that believe anything they see on CNN or Fox are generally unaware that organizations like Brookings even exist -- despite their "experts" often being brought on for commentary & analysis.
As much as the alternative media has grown, a tremendous amount of ordinary people have still never heard of PNAC, Agenda 21, Brookings (let alone any specific work of theirs) and so on. Also, keep in mind that "Which Path to Persia?" while being incredibly frank and incriminating, is not necessarily the pinnacle manifestation of their conspiracy -- which most likely would not be "public." However, human nature being what it is, we can take what they do make known, and what human history has already taught us and extrapolate what indeed they are really up to and why.

I am acutely aware of a possible strategy of tension created by dictating the tempo & nature of global conflict by publicly releasing apparent intentions -- then again the global elite of Wall Street and London really are subverting governments with US/UK funded NGOs and there is a paper trail overtly, publicly proving it. Since these NGOs are defended publicly as doing "humanitarian" work when targeted governments crack down on them, they must show where their funding comes from and appear, at least to the ignorant, to be legitimate. Despite both governments -- the aggressor and the besieged -- knowing the truth, the fact that so many gullible people don't understand that the "National Endowment for Democracy" is actually a corporate fascist front, tips the balance of power in favor of the greater propagandist -- Wall Street/London.

Of course, the only thing we can ever be sure of is ourselves, our family and friends, and people in our immediate community. That is why facing the vast landscape of geopolitics, and a means of implementing change across it, is better off being started in your own backyard, on your own block, and in your own community. It is easy to identify those in society who have acquired unwarranted influence, and just as easy in many cases to immediately begin boycotting and replacing them with local solutions.

The Pirate Bay now lets you download physical objects

Other file sharing sites may be shutting down in the aftermath of the MegaUpload raid, but the Pirate Bay is expanding instead. The site announced Monday that users can now download physical objects as well — sort of, anyway. The Pirate Bay introduced a new content category called “Physibles” that’s being used to trade digital designs that can be used with 3-D printers to recreate physical objects. From the announcement blog post:

We believe that the next step in copying will be made from digital form into physical form. It will be physical objects. Or as we decided to call them: Physibles. Data objects that are able (and feasible) to become physical. We believe that things like three dimensional printers, scanners and such are just the first step. We believe that in the nearby future you will print your spare sparts for your vehicles. You will download your sneakers within 20 years.

The idea to share these kinds of designs online is, of course, not new. Thingverse has been offering tinkerers a way to share their own 3-D designs for years. However, the Pirate Bay’s approach is to completely ignore any property rights to these objects. The category itself currently only contains a handful of designs, but the folks at the Pirate Bay seem to think it’s a big enough deal for them to almost change the name:

We believe that the future of sharing is about physible data. We’re thinking of temporarily renaming ourselves to The Product Bay – but we had no graphical artist around to make a logo. In the future, we’ll download one.

It remains to be seen whether the sharing of “physibles” will be as popular as traditional file sharing any time soon. But it could complicate the copyright debate even if it remains a fringe phenomenon for the foreseeable future, as one of the Bay’s users pointed out in the comments to a torrent labeled “1970 Chevelle Hot-Rod 3d model”:

While the takedown of Megaupload last week came as somewhat of a shock, some things in life are a little more predictable – like the speed and sharpness of UK artist Dan Bull.

Dan, who has covered many online issues such as those involving The Pirate Bay and SOPA, is back again today with another track, this time about Megaupload.

“Back in 2009 I published my first album ‘Safe’ via Megaupload, and sent the link to numerous music bloggers and reviewers. The Megaupload URL became the de facto home of my album,” Dan told TorrentFreak when asked about his motivation to write the song.

“Now, through no fault of my own, that URL has disappeared without any warning. All the links on those music blogs? Dead, along with three years of stats which I used to track where downloads were coming from.”

“Regardless of the legal case against Megaupload, the owners of the site haven’t been convicted of anything. By taking all content down it’s a case of shoot first, ask questions later. As a result of the RIAA pushing for this action, supposedly to defend music, independent artists like myself get hurt. It’s even been suggested to me that I should pursue a legal case against the US authorities for ‘stealing’ my album,” Dan adds.

Today is the Chinese New Year, calculated through the lunisolar calendar. Hence it is also known technically as the Lunar New Year, celebrated as well in other cultures. In the Chinese astrological tradition, this is the year of the Water Dragon, and the beginning of the Chinese Spring Festival. According to this site, a Water Dragon year, last experienced in 1952, is one where conformity and authority can be challenged and innovation encouraged. The watery aspect is a positive one, and calms the dragon's showy enthusiasm and gives the expansive fire a measure of introspection and contemplation.

As for Chinese astrological parallels with the past - what happened in 1952?

In January of that year, there were riots in Cairo and many downtown landmarks were burned in anti-British protests. The 750 buildings that were destroyed or damaged included the Opera House. These buildings were associated with Europeans. The country exploded in a nationalist, anti-imperialist revolution on July 23, overthrew King Farouk, and kicked out the British occupation, which had been there since 1882. Within a year, Egypt became a republic and Sudan became independent. The major strategic concern was the Suez Canal, which fell under Egyptian control.

The French were at war in Vietnam in the First Indochina War, which culminated in the Battle of Nà Sản.

There was a communist campaign to suppress nationalist guerrillas and bandits in southern China. There was also an Islamic insurgency in China. Supported by the nationalist Kuomintang and the CIA, Chinese Muslim insurgents operated out of Tibet to counter the spread of communism in China.

The University of Tennessee admitted its first African-American student.

The Pirate Bay is enemy #1 for digital piracy foes

ThePirateBay.org is one of the Internet's most popular trading posts for copyright-protected media like TV shows and movies.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- One day after a massive online protest against proposed new anti-piracy laws, federal agents shut down Megaupload, a popular hub for illegal file sharing.

But the most famous nexus for digital piracy sailed through the week unscathed. It's called The Pirate Bay, and it's the poster child for the kinds of "rogue" overseas sites Congress took aim at with a pair of bills called SOPA and PIPA. (Click here for our explainer: What SOPA is and why it matters.)

Run by an organization registered in the Seychelles, The Pirate Bay bills itself as the "world's largest tracker of BitTorrent files."

BitTorrent is a free software program that lets its 150 million users swap and download large media files. The tool has many legitimate uses, but it's also heavily used to illegally trade movies and other copyrighted content. The Pirate Bay can be confusing to those who aren't fluent geeks. Downloading files requires installing and learning to use torrent software, and the site's ad-choked pages aren't easy to understand at a glance.

But the system is extremely resilient -- and it's a haven for digital piracy. On Friday afternoon, one day after Megaupload's death, more than 36 million computers were connected to The Pirate Bay's network. Recent episodes of the TV shows "Vampire Diaries," "Big Bang Theory" and "The Mentalist" were among the day's most popular downloads, along with the video game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" and the just-released movie "War Horse."

The Pirate Bay is firmly in the U.S. government's crosshairs. Senator Orrin Hatch, who co-chairs the Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus, once denounced it on the Senate floor, and in December, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative highlighted The Pirate Bay on its list of "markets notorious for privacy."

The Pirate Bay simply operates a tracking network, so none of the copyright-protected files users commonly swap ever sit on the site's own servers. That makes it very hard to kill.

The site has successfully survived a number of assassination attempts in its nine-year existence.

Swedish anti-copyright organization Piratbyrån started The Pirate Bay in late 2003, taking advantage of the country's lax copyright laws. By October 2004, a handful of individuals were running the site independently.

It became a non-profit organization in 2006 -- the same year that brought The Pirate Bay a boatload of legal woes.

On May 31, 2006, police raided The Pirate Bay's office in Stockholm and confiscated the site's servers. The site went down for three days -- some users initially thought it was an April Fool's joke -- and temporarily moved its servers to the Netherlands. Protests broke out on the Swedish streets.

The Pirate Bay blamed the police raid on the Motion Picture Association of America, which acknowledged to Wired that it had "made criminal complaints" to Swedish authorities.

In 2007, Swedish officials charged three Pirate Bay operators and one of its financiers with "promoting other people's infringements of copyright laws." The trial took two years and ended with the conviction of operators Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Gottfrid Svartholm as well as businessman Carl Lundström.

The four were sentenced to one year in jail and a fine of $905,000 each. All except Svartholm, who was ill and skipped his scheduled court appearances, appealed the sentence, and in 2010 it was amended to include less jail time but a higher fine. The case is still ongoing: The three plan to take their battle to Sweden's Supreme Court.

Svartholm hasn't been seen publicly in several years. His whereabouts are unknown.

"Nobody is in contact with him," Sunde told online news site TorrentFreak late last year. "For all we know he might be dead, since no-one can reach him."

'0 torrents will ever be removed': The Pirate Bay's operators aren't fazed by the past legal actions, nor are they ruffled by threats of future lawsuits. They publicly thumb their noses at cease-and-desist letters from copyright holders, some of which are compiled on the site's "legal threats" section.

The Pirate Bay's responses to these letters are also posted: merry, expletive-laden missives that deride companies that cite U.S. laws in their complaints.

As the site told Dreamworks: "As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe. Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here. For your information, no Swedish law is being violated."

At the bottom of the Legal Threats page, The Pirate Bay makes its stance even more clear.

"For the law firms who don't get the hint above: we used to have a nice graph here, but it's simpler to just say: 0 torrents has [sic] been removed, and 0 torrents will ever be removed."

Dead body found on royal front lawn raises questions about personal lives of the elite

In the alternative media we are known to cover some very controversial and sensitive topics. Many of us, myself included, normally prefer to stay with topics like war, banking, genetically modified food and the growing police state. These are all issues that are backed with mountains of cold hard evidence. However, there are some other issues that are equally as important, but far more difficult to bring up in the public arena.

One particular topic that is hotly debated in activist circles is the depravity of the private lives led by those in power, such as the British Royal Family. We know and understand that these people are capable and obviously guilty of directing some of the most horrific acts of violence seen on this planet, but all of this violence is most often carried out through organizations and other people so they can maintain their benevolent image.

Sadly, the reality and intentions of those in power is often far from benevolent. In almost every case of royalty and authority across the planet, and throughout history, we have seen time after time that those who lust for and hold power are driven to commit extreme acts of violence and authoritarianism. Even if mass murder and slavery were at one time more socially acceptable, that does not change the moral injustice that has taken place -- and it does not excuse the crimes of these historical aggressors.

Out of all of the bloodthirsty tyrannies in the world, the British Royal Family is without a doubt the most vile, in terms of their global influence, as well as their deep history of corruption and violence. If the native populations slaughtered by the British crown in the past century were tallied, there is no doubt in my mind that the body count would surpass that of Stalin and Hitler combined.

The queen holds over 1/6 of the world’s land, and this territory was in no way acquired by peaceful or legitimate means. We could even argue that the war crimes carried out by British colonies like America and Israel are also a direct result of the global policy that is handed down by the royal family and their cohorts in the banking industry.

With all of this being the case people still have a hard time believing that some really sick stuff may be happening behind the closed doors of those in power. There is plenty of evidence that makes the case for these kinds of accusations, but because these people control the police, the media and the entire public discourse, they are always able to sweep their crimes under the rug.

One such controversy has presented itself in the first weeks of 2012, when the body of a teenage girl was found on the royal family’s private estate in Sandringham, Norfolk. The media and the police are of course denying that there is any evidence linking the royal family to the body and claiming that any accusations at this point are purely circumstantial. However, they seem to be overlooking the history of mysterious deaths surrounding the royal family, as well as their involvement in human trafficking for the purposes of torture and sex slavery.

One thing that I personally find very curious about this developing storyline is that the victim here was not a local, but was in fact a woman that was from Eastern Europe, thousands of miles from the royal estate. The victim and a close friend were said to be staying in a migrant worker camp, in slave like conditions.

This is interesting because aristocratic elites with close ties to the Royal Family have actually been convicted of importing sex slaves from various areas of Eastern Europe. The Royal Family has even been implicated by many victims in this horrible kidnapping ring. Last year, billionaire hedge fund manager and close associate of the royal family, Jeffrey Epstein, was charged with various counts of kidnapping, pedophilia and human trafficking. Despite damning evidence and multiple witness testimonies, Epstein used his political pull and financial resources to beat the case and get a minimal sentence.

Due to this controversy Prince Andrew took a lot of heat from the public, as he was a very close friend of Epstein’s and spent a whole lot of time with him. Some victims in this case have even claimed that Epstein “shared” his sex slaves with the Royal Family and would present them in the form of “gifts”.

If we combine all of this information with the fact that this is not the first time that a dead body has mysteriously appeared on a royal estate in the past year, we have every right to be suspicious. What’s worse is that the royal family enjoyed their Boxing Day shoot, just yards away from the crime scene, just about a week before the body was discovered.

Now, I’ll admit, this evidence wouldn’t be enough to put someone away. However, if you or I were implicated in a similar situation, this evidence would without a doubt make us prime suspects in the murder, and justify the search of our belongings and full investigation into our activities.

Unfortunately, we do not yet live in a world where everyone is held to the same standards, so people who have silly costumes and own a vast amount of the planet will never even be looked at as potential suspects in a murder case, even if a dead body appears of their front lawn.

So much can be said about the Royal Family, from their relation to the historical Count Dracula, to their involvement in human trafficking, to their support of the Nazi regime. Prince harry has even been seen at parties dressed like Hitler, complete with swastika patch and all. As horrifying as all of this is, and as important as it is that we know these things, it is also important to understand that these transgressions are minor in comparison to the institutionalized violence that this bloodline and others employ through governments, corporations and multinational control systems such as the United Nations.

Joseph Stalin said "One death is a tragedy, one million is a statistic." This may not be true, but, sadly, this is how people look at things. So while the millions killed in the Middle East and elsewhere are a far greater crime than one body found on a royal estate, this is a tragedy that is easier for people to wrap their minds around. Therefore, digging deeper into this crime could expose the overall sentiment of the elite and push the public dialogue about war and oppression closer to reality.

The unlucky Friday the 13th is one of the most well-recognized superstitions in the Western world. This tradition is over 700 years old and has a very interesting origin.

During the 12th century there was a massive religious war that consumed most of Europe and Asia. Europeans referred to these times as “the crusades”. This war lasted centuries and allowed an elite class of knights to accumulate so much power and wealth that their influence rivaled both the monarchy and the church. The knights of the temple of Solomon, or more commonly known as “The Knights Templar” were the most influential political force of their time. They were the world’s first international bankers and were the corporate giant of the middle ages.

The Templar Knights were a military force throughout the entire crusades, but didn’t become a strong political organization until they were given diplomatic immunity by the church in 1126. Their close relationship with the church was unusual for the time, as the lifestyle of a knight was usually associated more with the monarchy. The Knights Templar represented both the warrior and the priest, and were often referred to as the “fighting monks”. This best-of-both-worlds diplomacy allowed the knights to form their own political dynasty that transcended the established powers of the time. They did not have to abide by the same rules as the church or the monarchy, but they had the advantage and privileges of both institutions.

During the crusades it was rumored that the Templars studied alchemy and discovered forbidden knowledge on their journeys. This would not be the first time that this has happened in history, it is actually quite common for conquerors to return home with ancient artifacts, just like Napoleon did with the Rosetta Stone, for example. Some say that instead of offering their discoveries to museums, the Templars kept the artifacts and knowledge within their own order. This is all speculation and legend, but what we do know for certain is that the Templars were sneaky businessmen and became the world’s first multinational bankers.

They had most of the known world caught in a complex pyramid scheme that is eerily similar to the scams that are being run by international bankers today. They collected taxes for protecting trade roads, bankrolled both sides of all the wars and exploited the massive peasant class and used them as workhorses to build their fortunes. Through these shady practices the knights ended up having more money than the monarchy and the church combined. Both the church and the monarchy were deeply in debt to the Templars from loans they had taken out, so one would be able to argue quite easily that the Templars were the most dominant political institution of the time.

Eventually the monarchy grew very threatened by the immense power of the Knights Templar. The person to finally take action against the Templars was King Phillip the 4th of France. Since the Templars were under the protection of the church, King Phillip needed papal permission to overthrow them. In order to get this blessing Phillip covertly murdered two popes in less than a year until a candidate of his choice was in power. With all the necessary steps taken King Phillip made his move.

On the morning of Friday, April 13, 1307 there was a surprise raid on all of the Templar offices. The knights were being arrested on over a hundred different counts of heresy and treason . . . and confessed after being brutally tortured. After a short, rigged trial the Templars were sentenced to burn at the stake. The Grand Master of the Knights Templar cursed the king and pope before he was executed, and, synchronistically, both died within the year.

It is said that a fleet of Templar warships managed to escape France the night before the raids, and continued to control world events from behind the scenes. They apparently did this by changing their names and moving to various different parts of the known world. In fact, it is said by many that the Templars who managed to escape the Inquisition fled to Switzerland where they reestablished their international banking cartel.

This theory makes sense considering that the country has been a safe haven for bankers and robber barons for centuries. There are over 500 major banking institutions in Switzerland; the majority of them are owned and controlled by various elite bloodlines and covert organizations that I’ll describe in detail later on. It is estimated that 35% of all the private wealth globally is held in Switzerland. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is also based in Switzerland. These banks are among some of the only financial institutions in Europe who aren’t subject to audits and investigations from the new European Union government.

The financial district in London called “The City”, as well as the Vatican in Italy is also given the same kind of protection and secrecy, but they are the only areas in Europe that have those kinds of privileges. It is also rather interesting that the Swiss Guard is responsible for guarding the pope (located in Italy, not Switzerland), a task that was once the job of the Knights Templar.

The flag of Switzerland is actually an inversion of the Templar’s shield, the flag being red with a white cross and the shield being white with a red cross. The banking elite may have ties to the areas government and economy, but they have nothing to do with the people of Switzerland. They do not represent them, and their actions should not be held against the people of this country. In fact, Switzerland is one of the best places on earth to live, with very free social policies. They have a low crime rate, because everyone in the country is armed and drugs are legal. They also remain neutral in all major wars, but, still, when there is smoke there is usually fire.

Although I wouldn’t mind living in Switzerland myself, and imagine it is filled with wonderful people, there are just too many clues pointing to this region as playing a vital role in the many worldwide banking schemes. With this being a very realistic possibility, Templar influence would seem to put the puzzle together nicely, but it’s not something that we have been able to prove yet. Switzerland is just one of the many places where the Elite have established a stronghold to operate from; the same goes with “The City” in London, the Vatican, Washington DC and Zionist Israel. The people that live in these places have nothing to do with the Elite’s plans, aside from being used as workhorses, cannon fodder and political pawns.

Since the days of their fall from grace, the Templar Knights and their predecessors have learned their lesson, and have continued their work in secret. Even if the official order went underground, their business model and diplomatic strategies are still very much alive today and have a deep impact on our way of life. The Templars became an all-powerful “invisible government” by mastering and manipulating economics much like the bankers that influence world events today. In fact, today’s multinational bankers follow the Templars' model precisely and use all of the same age-old tactics to exploit the masses.

Dramatic improvements in memory

According to the new research, previous short-term studies have already shown that nicotine helps improve memory and attention span in people with Alzheimer's disease. This shouldn't be a huge surprise because nicotine stimulates receptors in the brain that are important for thinking and memory skills and people suffering from Alzheimer's disease are known to lose some of these receptors.

The new study investigated whether nicotine could help people with mild cognitive impairment -- the stage before dementia when people have mild memory or thinking problems but are not disabled. The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine study involved 74 research subjects with an average age of 76 who had mild cognitive impairment and who didn't smoke. Half of the group received a 15 mg. nicotine patch daily for six months while the other half of the study participants received a placebo. At the start of the study, the research subjects were given tests of their memory and thinking ability and these tests were repeated again at three and six months after they were placed on either the nicotine or dummy patch.

At the end of six months, the results were dramatic. Although the placebo group's mental abilities had decreased by 26 percent over this time period, the nicotine-treated group had regained a remarkable 46 percent of normal performance for age on long-term memory.

There were no serious side effects observed the people receiving the nicotine patch, either. Vanderbilt's Paul Newhouse, MD, head author of the study, pointed out in a media statement that the research provides strong justification for further investigation into the use of nicotine for people with early signs of memory loss.

File sharing is now an official religion in Sweden

For many people, file sharing is a way of life. At any given time, they will be seeding handfuls of torrents, downloading several more, and searching The Pirate Bay for something new. The practice provides a cathartic experience that you could even say gives meaning to their lives. So why not take the next step and turn it into a religion? That’s exactly what one man tried to do. The crazy part? He succeeded.

Yes, file sharing has been officially recognized as a religion by the Swedish government. The Church of Kopimism is the fruit of philosophy student Isak Gerson’s efforts. After two unsuccessful attempts to convince authorities to recognize the religion (its methods of praying or meditiaton were deemed too informal), Kopimism was finally granted religious status.

What does Kopimism hold as beliefs? You don’t think that it could have been officially recognized without its own set of creeds, do you? Among others, it holds the following axioms (paraphrased from an English translation):

copying of information is ethically right

spreading information is ethically right

copying or remixing information from another person is an act of respect and an expression of faith

Kopimism even has priests. A file sharing priest is called an Opar. An Opar’s duty is threefold: to live according to Kopimistic values, to help others live according to Kopimistic values, and to actively shape his environment to be more Kopimistic.

Most religions have a formal set of symbols, and Kopimism is no exception. It appropriately uses Control-C and Control-V (keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste) as sacred symbols. The church’s website does denote that any symbol can be reproduced as a Kopimist symbol, so perhaps Mac users will prefer to hold Command-C and Command-V as sacred symbols.

It’s easy to get a chuckle out of file sharing being recognized as a religion, but why not? If someone finds joy, purpose, and a sense of oneness with the universe by visiting The Pirate Bay, then how is that less important or less “right” than someone who has the same experience in a religion that society has deemed acceptable? Of course they’re breaking the law and taking copyrighted content for free, but they’d be doing that anyway. If you’re going to be doing something regardless, I say it’s better to celebrate it than to feel ashamed about it.

One thing that Kopimists won’t likely get, however, is immunity from prosecution based on religious grounds. Rastafarians, whose religion is much older and larger than Kopimism, are routinely rejected by courts when they attempt to defend their marijuana use on religious grounds. While file sharing isn’t prosecuted as often as cannabis use is, the results of such a legal defense — in Sweden or elsewhere — aren’t likely to be different.

Pepsi Co. Admits Mouse Body Would Disintigrate from Mountain Dew

There has been some rather shocking news lately concerning the multinational mega corporation Pepsi Co. and their highly popular beverage Mountain Dew.

After reportedly finding a mouse in a Mountain Dew can in 2009, Ronald Ball from Illinois is in the process of suing the soft drink giant after finding a dead mouse in his soda can.

Needless to say, Pepsi Co. is completely refuting his claims, saying that the mouse he found could not have been there as the drink is so acidic the mouse would have disintegrated before he opened it. The company says that the mouse carcass would have decomposed into a “jelly-like” substance.

Although Pepsi Co. is in opposition with Ron Ball's claims, a mouse body disintegrating in a can of soda isn’t any better than finding a dead mouse inside.

It is interesting to see that Pepsi Co. has no problem admitting to such an outrageous effect that could have been caused by their beverage. This information certainly says a lot about the products manufactured by the company.

Edible Mushrooms: Nature's Most Researched Anti-Cancer Agent

Over the course of the past few years we have uncovered a remarkable body of research on the medicinal properties of mushrooms.

In fact, when it comes to natural cancer research, no other category has been the subject of more human clinical research than AHCC and Lentinan, both unique preparations of shiitake mushroom.

AHCC stands for active hexose correlated compound, and is classified as a functional food made from hybridized mycelia of shiitake (and sometimes other mushrooms) in rice bran. It contains both alpha- and beta-glucan polysaccharides, well-known modulators of host immunity. Lentinan, also from shiitake (Lentinula edodes), is exclusively beta-glucan. What is so unique about these compounds is that they are "host-mediated" anti-cancer agents, helping the cancer-afflicted body combat cancer by boosting immune function.

This is a radically different approach versus conventional chemotherapy, which poisons rapidly dividing cells, indiscriminately, killing both cancer and immune cells (among other healthy cell types).

How can edible mushrooms like shiitake protect us against cancer, perhaps the most widely feared disease that presently afflicts our species? Could the reason be that we co-evolved with fungi, and that the essential polysaccharides they contain were present in our diet for so long that the genetic/epigenetic infrastructure of our bodies now depends on them? Beta-glucan, after all, is found widely distributed in whole grains, nutritional yeast, as well as fungi. The friendly bacteria, in and outside of our gut, produce the beta-glucan fraction through the biotransformative processes of digestive fermentation and, in the case of food, culturing. Could it be that, failing to consume (or produce) adequate quantities, our body fails in its cancer immunosurveillance -- not unlike the well-established role that vitamin D deficiency has in maintaining proper immune function, and therefore reducing cancer risk.

But perhaps there is an even deeper reason to why fungi keep us alive and well, even when faced with the most terrible of health challenges: we share a common, unique evolutionary origin, and our fates may still be intimately interwoven.

The microbiologist Mitchell Sogin was interviewed back in 2004 on the topic:

'Animals and sponges share a common evolutionary history from fungi...

...we thought fungi were related to plants or somehow were just colorless plants. Plants had seeds, fungi had spores, and so on. Scientists used to publish fungi articles in plant journals. But the work does not support that. We've shown that fungi and plants are very different from each other, and fungi are actually more closely related to animals.'

When asked the question: "Does all this mean humans are just highly evolved mushrooms?" Sogrin answered:

I'd say we share a common, unique evolutionary history with fungi. There was a single ancestral group of organisms, and some split off to become fungi and some split off to become animals.'

Could medicinal/edible mushrooms "lend us their power"? In certain traditions of herbalism, there is an acknowledgment of the sacred bond between patient and herb, where the plant lends its power to (s)he who is suffering, as a "plant ally." Beyond nutritional and caloric content, biochemical make-up, pharmacology, etc., certain fungi may embody the biological equivalent of compassion, and exude an abundance or superfluity of life energy that we may harness to correct imbalances within ourselves.

First, we must be willing to acknowledge that power in a source outside of ourselves, which is difficult for egocentric, anthropocentric humans to do. Second, we must consider ourselves worthy of the miracle of being healed, of life regenerating itself through us.

2011: Piracy Wars and Internet Censorship

Looking back at the past 12 months it’s fair to conclude that 2011 was the year that the entertainment industries focused on piracy-fueled Internet censorship. Domain seizures, DNS blockades, raids and arrests dominated the news, and the threat of the SOPA and PIPA bills in the US left millions of Internet users worried. Let’s see how events unfolded.

At the end of the year when new developments draw to a close, it’s time to take a look back and take stock. Below is our overview of some of the most interesting events we reported during the first half of 2011.

Take a deep breath…

January

After pressure from the entertainment industries, Google started to censor piracy-related keywords from its instant and autocomplete services. Keywords such as ‘torrent,’ ‘BitTorrent’ and ‘RapidShare’ were excluded from the start, and later in the year Google added a wide range of new terms including ‘The Pirate Bay.’

Despite these efforts the RIAA remained dissatisfied, patronizing the search engine with a could-do-much-better “Report Card” in December.

The mass-BitTorrent lawsuits that entered the US during 2010 reached a new milestone in 2011 with the 100,000th person being sued for alleged copyright infringement. In January alone several prominent lawsuits were added. Anime distributor Funimation announced a lawsuit against 1337 alleged BitTorrent downloaders, and the rights holders of “The Expendables” and Paris Hilton sex tape did the same.

One alleged BitTorrent user paid a mysterious settlement of $250,000.

There was also positive news from the UK, when so-called Speculative Invoicing schemes there came to an end, at least for a few months. ACS:Law, the law firm that had terrorized untold thousands of alleged file-sharers in the UK, quit the anti-piracy business and went into bankruptcy a while later. ACS:Law’s Andrew Crossley was honored with the title of “Internet Villain” of the year and will now face the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal in early 2012.

Two lawyers who were responsible for introducing Speculative Invoicing to the UK were fined and banned from practicing for 3 months. David Gore and former partner Brian Miller of the law firm Davenport Lyons were each told to pay a £20,000 fine and interim costs of £150,000 for their professional misconduct.

Meanwhile, RapidShare and Megaupload fought back against entertainment industry propaganda.

February

Early February, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seized several domains belonging to major sports streaming sites. One of the websites was Rojadirecta, an unusual target because two courts in Spain previously ruled that the site operates legally. Rojadirecta appealed the seizure but thus far without result.

In response to domain seizures many people voiced concern that they may be unconstitutional. US Senator Ron Wyden feared that the seizures could stifle free speech, and this indeed turned out to be the case as the US government shut down 84,000 websites by mistake late February.

In Australia, the Federal Court dismissed the movie industry’s appeal against a 2010 ruling which found that Internet service provider iiNet is not responsible for copyright infringements carried out by its file-sharing customers. This decision was appealed once more and is now with the High Court.

Oh, and despite rampant piracy Hollywood box office grosses worldwide surpassed the magic $30 billion mark for the first time in history.

March

Following the February seizure of several domains belonging to major sports streaming sites, the feds arrested the operator of Channelsurfing.net in March. The 32-year-old Texan Bryan McCarthy was taken into custody on suspicion of criminal copyright infringement. In November, McCarthy was indicted on several copyright related charges. Awaiting his trial, the psychologically-troubled operator pleaded not guilty on all counts.

In the same month President Obama’s “IP Czar” Victoria Espinel laid the foundations for PIPA and SOPA, calling on Congress to make changes in order to make it easier to clamp down on copyright infringement. Among the recommendations were calls to turn streaming into a felony alongside authority to wiretap in copyright cases. Music industry expert, book author and Grammy winner Moses Avalon welcomed the plans, which he declared would signal the end of TorrentFreak.

In the ongoing mass BitTorrent lawsuits, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell laid down a landmark verdict that would make it easy for copyright holders – the makers of The Hurt Locker in particular – to send cash demands to people they suspect of copyright infringement. The fact that Howell previously worked as an RIAA lobbyist and as the Managing Director of a pirate-chasing outfit led to suggestions of a conflict of interest.

Meanwhile in Belarus, a pirated copy of The Hurt Locker aired on national TV.

April

In April, worries about the US domain seizures prompted another major torrent site to move to a new domain as a precaution. KickassTorrents, one of the most visited torrent sites on the Internet, replaced its .com domain name with the Philippine extension .ph.

At the same time a group called MAFIAAFire coded a browser plugin to make these type of domain transitions go more smoothly by automatically redirecting users to these new homes. The release went viral and in the following months more than 200,000 people installed the add-on. ICE wasn’t happy with this and asked Mozilla to pull the add-on from their site. However, Mozilla denied the request, arguing that this type of censorship may threaten the open Internet.

An Italian court ordered all ISPs to block subscriber access to BTjunkie, leaving hundreds of thousands of Italians with the task of finding a new torrent site. At least, that was the plan. Just hours after the news was made public, a brand new and ad-free proxy site was launched. The site allowed Italians to browse an uncensored web and access BTjunkie, as well as another popular blocked site, The Pirate Bay.

May

In May, US lawmakers introduced the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), a bill that delivers a wide range of censorship tools authorities and copyright holders can use to quash websites they claim are facilitating copyright infringement. It is basically a revamped and worsened version of the controversial COICA proposal which had to be resubmitted after its enaction failed last year. Two weeks after its introduction, the Senate’s Judicial Committee unanimously approved the bill and it now awaits the senate vote.

In the same week as PIPA was introduced, three U.S. Senators presented the Commercial Felony Streaming Act, a bill that would make streaming unauthorized music, movies and TV-shows a felony. The bill is said to address a gap in current legislation where streaming is not considered a criminal offense.

The popular video streaming site “Fast Pass TV” was shut down following the arrest of one of the site’s alleged operators. The site itself didn’t host any copyrighted content but indexed videos hosted on third-party sites.

In the US the controversial mass-BitTorrent lawsuits continued. Early May the makers of the Expendables set a record when they sued 23,322 people at once, but this record was broken a few weeks later when The Hurt Locker lawsuit was updated to include 24,583 alleged BitTorrent users. Both cases were dismissed a few months later.

In another mass-BitTorrent lawsuit – VPR Internationale v. Does 1-1017- Judge Harold Baker denied a Canadian adult film company permission to subpoena ISPs for the personal information connected to the IP-addresses of their subscribers. The reason? IP-addresses are not people, and especially in ‘adult entertainment’ cases this could obstruct a ‘fair’ legal process.

US authorities resumed “Operation In Our Sites” and seized several domain names associated with copyright infringement or counterfeit related crimes. Among the new targets were two sites that linked to copyrighted films hosted on third-party streaming sites such as megavideo.com and veoh.com.

Oh, and in the midst of all the censorship talk The Pirate Bay moved their severs to a secret mountain complex after Comcast offered help to fix a network issue.

A report from the UN’s Human Rights Council labeled Internet access a human right, arguing that laws which allow for the disconnection of Internet users are disproportionate and should be repealed.

Richard O’Dwyer, the 23-year-old UK-based administrator of a TV show and movie links site was arrested by police. Following his detention in the UK’s largest prison, the admin continued fighting his extradition to the U.S.

On June 11th 2011, Europe witnessed one of the largest piracy-related busts in history. The popular movie streaming portal Kino.to was shut down and a dozen people connected to the site were arrested.

As collateral damage, several file-hosting services connected to Kino.to also went down. Several people went on trial for their part in the site’s operation and the main admin was sentenced to three years in prison. Interestingly, a report published after the raids revealed that Kino.to’s users were actually the movie industry’s best customers.

Cannabis Prohibition: A British History By Nuff Said

With the masses of American documentaries on Cannabis history it is a lot easier to learn the story of cannabis and the history of its prohibition in the US than it is here in the UK. But crucial to the fight is the knowledge on how cannabis prohibition came into effect in Britain.

It may surprise some of you to learn that cannabis, far from having the stigma attached that it has today, was regarded as an important part of medicine for hundreds, if not thousands of years all across our planet. Britain was no exception, with doctors and leaders embracing the hemp plant and its multitude of uses.

The most famous person to use cannabis in British history was Queen Victoria, who used it regularly to help with menstrual cramp, morning sickness and labour pain[1]. This was prescribed to her by her physician J.R Reynolds and provided her great pain relief. It is nice to know that one of our great leaders was high a lot of the time yet still managed to break the record for the longest reigning monarch. Suite 101 states that: “She had nine children of her own, and they produced 42 grandchildren and 85 great-grandchildren. Her sons and daughters married into royal families all over the European continent. As a result of this, it was said that she was the grandmother of all of Europe: a well-deserved designation.”[2] Not bad for a stoner ay?

One cause for the decline of cannabis use in medicine was the invention of the syringe towards the end of the 1800s, meaning that medicine could be delivered in a much faster way. As cannabis could not be dissolved in water it could not be injected, so doctors began using different methods of pain relief, including the newly discovered aspirin.

The Independent Drug Monitoring Unit (IDMU) website states: “In 1893 a huge report by the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission had concluded that ‘the moderate use of hemp drugs is practically attended by no evil results at all’.”[3] In fact, the committee suggested that the best way to manage the situation was to induce a cannabis tax, as was already effective in India at that time. This tax generated the Bengal Government £100,000 per year throughout the 1860s (approx. £5-10 million in today’s money). But these ideas never took off in the UK, and it would be 30 years before the government began controlling cannabis at all. Our government was much more focused on the dangers of cocaine and opium, and during the 1920s regular scandals appeared in the newspaper depicting foreign men corrupting white women with the drugs. Cannabis was hardly ever even mentioned, and at this time was used by very few recreationally throughout the whole of Europe.

Now cannabis prohibition itself began with something called the 1925 Dangerous drugs act, which didn’t actually come into effect until 28^th September 1928. We have Egypt and Turkey to thank for it being added to the agenda of the 1925 Convention on Narcotics Control, and this was based upon a secular adaption of their previous Islamic prohibition laws. Before this cannabis was available to all if prescribed by doctors in the UK, and could even be bought in shops in the USA towards the start of the 20^th Century. The league of Nations made no investigations into the dangers of cannabis until 10 years after its prohibition began, but although India had been against its prohibition and had carried out the only previous serious investigation into cannabis, contradicting its supposed dangers, 57 Nations along with Britain signed the agreement.

Skip now to 1945, the year that World War 2 ended. There were only 4 convictions for cannabis use this year in Britain, much less than the 206 opium-related convictions. 1950 was a landmark as it was the first year more people were convicted of cannabis (86) than for opium (41) and other manufactured drugs (42) put together. This was in part because of increased police raids on jazz clubs, which also generated fresh propaganda about black men corrupting white women with drugs.

By the early 1960s recreational drug use was on the increase in Britain throughout white, suburban classes, due mainly to influence from American beatniks, folk singers and jazz/blues musicians. IDMU states that: “It was seen as a jazzy, sexy, Black thing to do, and [in Europe], an American thing… It was probably inevitable that ideas developed about a politics of personal growth, and the right to any pleasure that does no harm to others. Soon white middle-class youth were smuggling and dealing to their own class. Often they believed they were benefiting a new, happier and calmer society.”[4] 1964 marked another change when for the first time more white people than black people were convicted for cannabis in the UK.

The same year saw The Beatles introduced to cannabis by Bob Dylan in an Airport in America. Their mass following ensured that cannabis became known to a lot more people in the UK, and other artists and influential people also became advocates of its use, for example the poet Allen Ginsberg who took steps to try and change people’s perception of cannabis. But of course, we realise, 40 years on that these views were way ahead of their time, and cannabis remains illegal here in the UK today both for medical and recreational use.

The 1965 the Dangerous Drugs Act towed the UK in line with parts of the UN single convention. Cannabis became considered as bad as opiates in the eyes of the law, and no distinctions were made between supply and possession. As a result, the number of arrests and convictions for cannabis skyrocketed. Also in this year a law was passed making it illegal to allow people to use drugs on owned premises, leading to even more convictions. IDMU states that “Convictions for cannabis offences rose by 79% in a year – in 1967 they rose another 113%. Up to 90% of those convictions were for personal possession.” Suddenly smoking cannabis had become very dangerous indeed for British citizens, not because it was dangerous, but because it could get you put in prison. It is worth noting that this is pretty much the situation that remains today, and although you are not likely to go to prison for possession, a criminal record can be extremely damaging in today’s society.

During these years News of The World gossip columns fuelled police raids on black meeting places and musical artist’s mansions. Police also used their powers to stop and search discriminately, by harassing black people and ‘long hairs’. In 1967 a pamphlet was produced by the National Council for Civil Liberties which highlighted discrimination within drugs laws including accusations of police planting evidence and judges giving harsh sentencing. Also in 1967 an organisation called SOMA was set up which led a campaign to improve cannabis laws. IDMU states that the advert contained: “an explanation of how damaging the law was, compared with the harmlessness of cannabis. There were quotes from modern medical opinions such as ‘does not lead to degeneration, does not affect the brain cells, is not habit forming, and does not lead to heroin addiction’. It was signed by 72 prominent people including some of Britain’s best-known artists and writers, two Nobel Prize winners, two MP’s, journalists, doctors and the Beatles [who paid for it].”[5] SOMA were not actually protesting to legalise cannabis, rather for scientific studies to be carried out with lesser penalties and possible access for medical use.

The BBC website states that: “In 1968, the Wootton Report, a Home Office investigation into the effects of cannabis concluded: “There is no evidence that this activity is causing violent crime or aggression, anti-social behaviour, or is producing in otherwise normal people conditions of dependence or psychosis requiring medical treatment.””[6] The same report also pointed out that 15% of people were sent to prison for possessing less than 30 grams, with 13% having no previous convictions. This report was published in January 1969, almost a year after it had been finished. However the parliamentary debates on the matter were filled with stories of how Cannabis led to heroin, and it was decided that more research was needed before reclassification.

SOMA dissolved in 1970, and The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 reclassified cannabis as a class B drug, level with amphetamines. This act made distinctions between possession and supply, but increased sentences rather than decreasing them. Cultivating cannabis could now get you 14 years in prison, with up to 5 years for possession (although fines were more common than prison time). This act did not prohibit the use of hemp fibres, stalk or seeds, but a license had to be issued from the Home Office. These licences were often only issued to researchers.

Also in 1971 the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) was set up, its purpose to provide advice on the dangers of drugs to the government. But in the case of cannabis its advice has been ignored several times, the most notable leading to the sacking of Prof. David Nutt, a well-respected leader of the ACMD in 2009. Even back in 1979 the ACMD advised lowering cannabis to a class C drug, but they were ignored.

When The Conservatives came to power in 1981, they stated that they had no intention of ever lowering drug penalties or lowering the classification of cannabis. Sadly this still seems to be the case with our government today.

As if fines for possession weren’t enough, a law in 1986 called The Drugs Trafficking Offences Act allowed courts to confiscate money they suspected of being generated from illegal enterprise. This was added on top of already hefty fines, and if the money could not be paid then extra prison time could be given.

Maximum sentences for drugs were re-raised in 1994, and maximum fines for cannabis went up by 250%. The same year there were over 72,000 cautions/convictions for cannabis in the UK.

In 1999 the Legalise Cannabis Alliance formed as a political party in Norwich. They stood five candidates in Norwich and one in Peterborough the local elections in 2000. In 2001 they had candidates in 13 constituencies.

In January 2004 cannabis was lowered to a class C substance. That meant much lower penalties and reduced sentences for possession and even supply. Many saw this as steps towards decriminalisation of a drug that was becoming more and more popular in the UK. However this was not to last, and Janauary 2009 saw a reverse of the laws by The Labour Party after campaigns by our beloved tabloids stating common propaganda and scare tactics like a bit of weed would make you go mad, generating a cannabis hysteria throughout our nation. It is worth noting that against the advice of the ACMD, Labour had been planning to make cannabis class B from July 2007.

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance deregistered as a political party in November 2006, but voted to continue as a pressure group. This year, they voted to re-register as a political party and elect a leader, and have since rebranded the campaign CLEAR – Cannabis Law Reform.

In 2010 Sativex was approved in the UK, meaning people with multiple sclerosis could now legally medicate in Britain. However the drug is extremely hard to get prescribed due to its high cost, and its ineffectiveness compared to herbal cannabis has been made apparent. It was also exposed that Sativex, far from the isolated compounds it listed was actually cannabis soaked in ethanol with added peppermint to mask taste.

It is now 2011, and cannabis remains a class B substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. No distinction is made between medical and recreational use of herbal cannabis, with people who need cannabis as medicine being considered common criminals by our Government. 15 States in America, including the capital Washington D.C have medicinal cannabis programmes, as do an increasing number of Western countries. Britain is not one of them, and it seems as if prohibition has some fight left in it yet.

Converting Urban and Suburban Lands for Growing Food

The following is excerpted from The Urban Food Revolution, published by New Society Publishers.

I felt just a little conspicuous walking through the South Side of Chicago; I was the only white person in view since I got off the bus many blocks away. I was headed to Growing Home's Wood Street Urban Farm in the Englewood neighborhood. "You must be going to the garden," a man said to me as I walked past a cluster of friends chilling on a porch a few blocks away from the garden. The garden and I are both relative newcomers to the neighborhood. Its parent organization, Growing Home, was started in 1992 by Les Brown, Director of Policy for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, but this farm has only been around since 2007. It's a beacon of hope and fresh food in a depressed neighborhood with few real food stores. A restaurant I passed on the way, Pappy's Restaurant, featured shrimp, fish, chicken wings, tacos and burritos. A "Fresh Meat" store had nothing but liquor ads in the window.

Hidden at the end of a cul-de-sac in a resolutely residential neighborhood, Wood Street Urban Farm's trim, neat rows of vegetables under hoop-house frames bespeak a new standard of eating and growing local. Through the back of one hoop house, I could see the homes right across the street. This two-third-acre site is a farm, but it is far away from typical farmland.

Three collegiate-looking young people are bunching turnip greens, mint and radishes for an upcoming farmers market on the north side of town. Selling produce at the various farmers markets is just one way the farm makes money to support itself.

The Wood Street Urban Farm provides job training through its non-profit organic agriculture business. Upstairs, in the brand new office building (finished July 2009), the day's training class breaks for an afternoon smoke. These trainees are people with employment barriers who are learning the basics of finding work. They look more like hip young people than farmers, but they're being trained for any job they can get that's food-related. This year has been better than last: one member of the class already has a job. Today's class is trying to figure out how to attract neighbors to the Wednesday veggie stall set up on the premises.

Before the spartan but classy new offices were built, vandalism was an issue with the farm's on-site trailer. Now things are better. In 2008 the farm produced approximately 5,000 pounds of produce; a year later it was double that. Spinach, lettuce, arugula, swiss chard, tomatoes, zucchini, beets, turnips, kale, mustard greens and collards all grow happily in the warm, moist hoop-house climate, oblivious to the traditional urban surroundings.

Wood Street Urban Farm is just one of many new intrusions of agriculture and food production into the urban food revolution landscape. To think of food production in cities as an intrusion is odd. Historically, food has been an integral part of city life; in fact, the first cities came into being to store and protect domesticated agricultural produce. In the developing world, live food is still everywhere in cities. Without that urban produce, many more people would be starving than already are.

Live food--cattle, chickens, orchards, pigs, vegetables--has been a major presence in cities through the ages. Only in very recent years has food production been pushed out beyond the city boundaries and processed food been brought in the back way--through suburban warehouses and hidden loading bays behind centralized supermarkets; now, food magically appears out of trucks, trains, planes and ships from places we know nothing about.

Today's challenge is to bring food back into our cities in a much more visible and tangible way, "past forward" to a 21st century model that feeds on the new technologies and the old reality that everything we eat has to grow somewhere--the closer, the fresher.

Following news that Switzerland will permit its residents to grow 4 cannabis plants for personal consumption from January 1st 2012, The Basque Parliamant in Spain has followed suit. A new law bill will officially regulate the cultivation, sale and consumption of cannabis in the Basque region from 2012.

Today however cannabis is so much a part of European life no one takes much notice of how it stands legally anymore.

But for the Basque region of Spain and its many cannabis social clubs its hoped this law change will put an end to the practice of kicking down the front doors of otherwise perfectly law-abiding citizens simply because they prefer cannabis over alcohol.

The chemicals that produce fragrance react with ozone in the air to form formaldehyde and ultrafine particles that can collect in the lungs. This effect is not limited to household cleaner, however. 3. Test Your Home for Radon

If you live in a climate that allows for proper window ventilation all year long, then you will be able to avoid the issue and keep your windows open for a few hours each day.

Even during the winter season, however, keeping your windows open for just a few minutes per day can make a difference. If possible, place a fan in one window to blow indoor air outside, and another facing inward to blow outside air in. This will allow for optimum circulation of the air, bringing in fresh new air and removing toxic air buildup.

"Most of our patients and our staff were really skeptical about doing a reality TV show because they were watching Jersey Shore and The Kardashians," says Andrew DeAngelo, general manager of Oakland, California's Harborside Health Center, the largest medical marijuana dispensary in the world. Andrew and his brother, Harborside's Executive Director Steve DeAngleo, are co-stars of Weed Wars, a new show by the Discovery Channel that looks into lives of those who run Harborside, the patients that seek out their services, and the politicians looking to shut them down.

"There are a lot of stigmas about medical cannabis patients, that we don't work hard, that we're a bunch of stoners, that we are lazy, that we are really criminals or drug traffickers," explains Andrew DeAngleo. "All that is a lie that has been perpetrated by the feds and the media." By opening up their work and lives to cameras, the DeAngelo brothers hope to present a side of the medical marijuana debate that is rarely seen on American television. "This is our chance - and our patients and our staff's chance - to shine."

Reason.tv sat down with the DeAngleo brothers to discuss the show, the multi-agency crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries and how the Obama Administration's recent reversal of policy is creating an opening for Republicans this election cycle.

Todmorden grows all of its own vegetables, witnesses improved civic life and reduced crime as a result

When the small British mill town of Todmorden, tucked in between Yorkshire and Lancashire, first began installing fruit and vegetable gardens all around the area as part of the Incredible Edible program, it likely had no idea that the novel, yet simple, concept would make the town a foremost inspirational and self-sustaining model of the future.

Fresh herbs, succulent greens, and tasty fruits can be found growing near civic buildings, college campuses, supermarket parking lots, and various other places. Small garden plots, raised planting beds, and even small soil strips in these areas can be found brimming with fresh produce, all of which are free to anyone who want it, and at any time.

It is all part of a program called Incredible Edible, which was founded by Mary Clear, a local grandmother of ten, and Pam Warhurst, former owner of a local restaurant in town known as Bear Cafe. The duo had a shared goal of making Todmorden the first town in the UK to become completely self-sufficient in food -- and their endeavors have been successful, at least as far as keeping up with demand for produce from locals who want it.

The program so far utilizes 70 large planting beds located all around the town to plant raspberries, apricots, apples, blackcurrants, redcurrants, strawberries, beans, peas, cherries, mint, rosemary, thyme, fennel, potatoes, kale, carrots, lettuce, onions, vegetables, and herbs. Not only did locals quickly catch on and begin taking the produce, but they also generally respect the system and do not take advantage of it.

"If you take a grass verge that was used as a litter bin and a dog toilet and turn it into a place full of herbs and fruit trees, people won't vandalize it. I think we are hard-wired not to damage food," said Warhurst, concerning the notion that offering free fruit and vegetables might lead to abuse or other crimes. She noted, in fact, that quite the opposite has occurred -- the Incredible Edible program has improved community relations, and reduced crime by an incrementally higher amount every single year since it first started.

The program has been so successful, in fact, that many other communities both in the UK and abroad are now interested in starting their own public garden programs as well. Besides improving the sense of community and reducing crime, Incredible Edible has renewed a new sense of appreciation for food and how it is grown, as well as renewed interest in actually growing it among the next generation, which is the envy of many progressive communities around the world.

In America there has been a campaign to occupy the ports, and though they have been evicted from the Wall Street site they are planning to re-occupy it with Occupy 2. In London there has been the occupation of the UBS building and the forming of the “Bank of Ideas”.

The occupy movement has to grow or it dies and the only way for it to grow is to branch out and bring the idea to a greater number of people. The occupying of the ports in America is widening the range of influence and allowing a greater number of people to become involved. The London “Bank of Ideas” again will involve a greater range of people and will widen the idea of occupation as a tool of change, rather than sitting in one spot in some symbolic action.

The work places, distribution and the streets should belong to the people, only then will we have justice.

Organic Gardening 101 -- How to Start an Organic Garden

One great way to avoid the threat of genetically modified foods, pesticides, and toxic additives is to start your own organic garden.

While the garden can be as large or small as you’d like, the benefit of knowing exactly how your food was prepared, and therefore what is in it, is worth the time and effort.

As you will soon find, it is actually relatively simple to begin your first organic garden.

Organic Gardening Step 1: Planning Your Garden

Before you begin purchasing seeds and deciding on what you’d like to plant, you need to both establish goals for your garden as well as learn about how to effectively avoid low quality seeds and plants. Is your garden intended to feed you and your family for months at a time? If so, it still may be beneficial to start with a smaller garden at first to practice your technique. Regardless of the size, it is crucial that you are using the right seeds. It is preferable that you purchase high quality certified organic seeds that are not genetically modified.

A number of sites exist that provide 100% organic, non-genetically altered seeds for thousands of different plant varieties. You can even find non-GMO seed packs on Amazon for fair prices. The great news is that once you’ve purchased your initial batch of seeds, you can simply utilize the seeds from your new plants in the future to plant more. As for the soil, you may also have to acquire some organic soil if your backyard does not already contain a compost pile or other high-quality soil. If your backyard does contain high-quality soil or compost, you can also opt to use it inside for your window sill potting plants.

Now it is time to determine what you’d like to grow. For your initiation into organic gardening, try one of the 10 plants considered to be the easiest to grow. Whether on your window sill or out back, these 10 nutritious plants will most likely sprout right up without much of a challenge. These include:

Pea shoots

Beetroot

Lettuce

Mint

Courgettes

Dwarf French Beans

Onions

Strawberries

Next up, it’s time to decide where you’d like to set your garden.

Organic Gardening Step 2: Setting Your Garden

Whether it’s in your window sill in a few small- to large-sized pots or your back yard, it’s time to analyze a few key factors when it comes to placing your garden. Keeping your size goals in mind, it’s time to determine the best place for your new organic garden. If it’s an herb or vegetable garden you’ve got in mind, you’ll need a site that gets at least six hours of sun per day. It is also important to make sure that there is sufficient drainage for wherever you place the plant. If your prospective area receives a large quantity of rain that is not easily drained and rerouted, then that is less than optimal and you may want to consider changing the setting. Herbs and vegetables prefer well-drained soil. If it’s an ornamental bed, consider placing it where you can enjoy it from inside your house as well.

Once you have picked a site, observe it for a day for two. Examine how many hours of sun it gets on a daily basis, and the intensity of the sunshine. You can even test out the soil you are using with 3 simple tests.

To determine the type of soil you are working with, take a handful of moist soil from your garden, and give it a firm squeeze. Then, open your hand. One of three things will happen:

It will hold its shape, and when you gently poke it, it will crumble. This means you have optimal quality soil.
It will hold its shape, and, when poked, the soil still sits stubbornly in your hand. This indicates that you have clay-based soil.
It will fall apart as soon as you open your hand. This means you have sandy soil.

If the quality of your soil is poor, then you can either bring your gardening indoors or purchase some organic soil to augment your current soil.

Organic Gardening Step 3: Planting

Once you have your plants, dig a hole just as deep and at least twice as wide as the root ball of your plant. Place your plant in the prepared area, and backfill with the soil you just removed. Tamp it in, and make sure to water it thoroughly. A thoroughly watered root ball will help your plant adjust better to its new surroundings and help to avoid transplant shock.

After situating all of your plants, make sure that if you are outdoor gardening to give your entire garden a 3-inch thick layer of organic mulch to prevent weeds while simultaneously retaining soil moisture. This can include shredded bark, hay, chopped leaves, or grass clippings.

The cause of Reefer Madness V2? (and no, it’s not skunk)

A quick update on the previous blog “Complaint to the PCC re The Daily Mail October 30th – Update of sorts“: The Press Complaints Commission has now started investigating my complaint regarding the outrageous reporting of a study from Bristol university that the, paper claimed, proved cannabis caused psychosis. The study proved no such thing of course and didn’t even use cannabis, or people. So with luck the Daily Mail will soon be hauled over the coals. Well, we can hope.

Over on CLEAR an impressive archive of PCC complaints is starting to build up and a quick glance at the growing list shows the Daily Mail is no stranger to misreporting the cannabis issue. Since the CLEAR PCC campaign began at the start of this year there have been a total of 40 complaints of which 19 – almost half – have been against the Daily Mail or the Mail on Sunday. Now this doesn’t represent some kind of vendetta on behalf of either myself or Peter Reynolds, simply the Daily Mail frequently breaches the PCC guidelines which stipulate the press should take care not to publish distorted or misleading information. Fact is, it’s not that the Daily Mail is sloppy and just fails to take due care an attention, it’s pretty clear that it fabricated a lot of its stories and deliberately prints distorted and misleading information.

Now the thing is given its reputation I don’t expect the claim that the Daily Mail deliberately publishes distorted and misleading information to come as a great surprise to that many people, it is not, shall we say, an earth-shaking revelation. However, the fact that politicians take the opinion of the Daily Mail seriously is not in doubt and that a publication which has so much influence uses this power to promote policies based on lies is deeply worrying.

So perhaps it’s time to recap a little and take a quick look at what the Daily Mail has been doing over the past few years. It is not much of an exaggeration to claim that the whole “reefer madness” hype – or at any rate a large part of it – can be placed at the door of the Daily Mail. Again, this isn’t exactly news, but the way it’s been done and indeed the extent it’s been done is a real eye opener.

Before we go any further though a couple of health warnings: First, the Daily Mail isn’t alone in spreading hype, far from it. Much of the gutter press has joined in to promote the great “skunk scare” and all the rest of the alarmist claims that support reefer madness V2. Indeed it’s not only been the tabloids with even the quality end of the market joining in lead, of course, by the Independent of Sunday. Secondly it is important to note that the Daily Mail has, on occasion, run factual and honest stories relating to cannabis and even to cannabis law reform. Perhaps most notably the paper failed to join in the hype created by Julie Myerson in early 2009 – this was one of those “skunk took my child away” claims from a self-publicist with good press connections which most of the tabloids swallowed hook line and sinker. The way the Mail reported this whole affair was a shining example of a jewel in the mud, but it was a rare example of such reporting.

So it was that I sat down on a quiet day last week and entered “cannabis” into the Daily Mail search and ploughed through the 3000 + results looking for reefer madness articles to salvage. Some hours later, foaming slightly at the mouth the job was done and the list can be seen here in The Daily Mail Reefer Madness Archive.

Several things become obvious from this list. The list starts at 2001, which is when the internet age arrived and these things all become searchable. Back then the cannabis issue was being reported in a reasonably factual – verging on supporting – sort of way. In the whole of 2001 only one vaguely reefer madness story was run: “Cannabis can cause insanity, scientists warn”

Professor Heather Ashton, from the University of Newcastle, said cannabis contains between 450 and 500 different substances and the smoke from a cannabis cigarette is more likely to cause cancer than an ordinary tobacco cigarette.
‘Cannabis affects almost every body system,’ she said. ‘It combines many of the properties of alcohol, tranquillisers, opiates and hallucinogens.’

2002 saw a few more such claims – but still only 7, warning of a dark future caused by cannabis. How cannabis can cause Schizophrenia reported

Researchers have found the first evidence that marijuana can cause genetic abnormalities associated with the mental illness, which affects about one in every 100 people.

2003 through 2005 saw around 12 or so such stories. We were told Cannabis ‘kills 30,000 a year’, and, without doubt Cannabis causes mental illness.

and of course Melanie Phillips asked Why are we soft on this killer drug?

It was around 2004 the Tories elected Micheal Howard as leader and as the mail reported Tories would reverse cannabis decision. That story was actually about a leaflet the government was issuing to dispel the idea that cannabis was being legalised by the downgrading to C.

Around this time we had the arrival of so-called “skunk” (albeit about 10 years after the market shift from imported hash to UK grown herbal cannabis had actually happened), “Potent cannabis presents even greater dangers“, apparently quoting Dr Clare Gerada, head of the Royal College of General Practitioners’ Drugs Misuse unit claimed

Genetically modified forms of the drug are now the norm rather than the exception – in fact in many cases it is difficult for users to buy anything else.

2006 saw 20 articles and a ramping up of the scare stories; of course the gateway theory was highlighted with proof positive in Early cannabis abuse ‘leads to heroin addiction’

Taking cannabis as a teenager really does pave the way to heroin addiction in later life, say scientists.
Researchers have found that cannabis acts as a ‘gateway’ drug, because exposure during adolescence primes the system to crave the chemical stimulation of hard drugs.

but more than that, cannabis not only killed but it made the users kill: Soldier killed friend’s dad while having ‘cannabis-induced delusions’

Cannabis-induced delusions drove a soldier to hack his best friend’s father to death with a pair of garden shears, a court heard today.

and Cannabis downgrading blamed for psychotic killer gangs by vicar told us

Labour’s decision to downgrade cannabis has filled youths with a ‘lawless bravado’ which turns them into potential killers, a senior church figure and police advisor has warned

The reason for all this of course, was cannabis makes you mad according to the Daily Mail. The paper had this bit between its teeth now and wasn’t going to let go. 2007 saw 46 reefer madness stories, including Escaped prisoner killed man while high on ‘skunk’ cannabis and Teen who butchered two friends was addicted to skunk cannabis. We are told that Cannabis now ten times stronger than in the 1980s:

Cannabis smoked today is ten or even 20 times stronger than when David Cameron was a teenager in the 1980s – hugely increasing the danger it poses.

Life for cannabis addict who murdered two friends in frenzied knife attack and Boy on skunk cannabis butchered a grandmother were just two more stories, “something”, the politicians realised, clearly had to be done. So it was that in July of 2007 the Mail gleefully announced Brown ditches disastrous softly-softly policy on cannabis, reporting

Gordon Brown has called a halt to Labour’s disastrous ‘softly softly’ policy on cannabis.
In a surprise U-turn, the Prime Minister ordered an urgent review of the controversial decision taken three years ago to downgrade the drug from Class B to C.

Gordon Brown had just taken over from Toy Blair and had let it be known that cannabis was to be reclassified back to class B, even though he was obliged to ask the ACMD for its opinion first. Of course, what happened is a matter of record, the ACMD said “No, keep it at C”, so Brown overrode his expert advisers and placated the Daily Mail.

2008 saw another 45 reefer madness items, including Mother of goth student kicked to death by binge drinking teens attacks rise of ‘skunk’ cannabis which blamed skunk for the fact that binge drinking kids

The mother of a gap year student murdered by a gang of “feral” thugs for being a goth has claimed the rise of “skunk” is one of the biggest cause of problems among young people.
Sylvia Lancaster says more teenagers and young people than ever before are smoking the strong form of cannabis without realising the powerful effect it can have.
She spoke out after her daughter’s killers, two binge-drinking teenagers, were jailed for life for kicking and stamping her to death after she tried to stop them assaulting her boyfriend.
Brendan Harris, 15, and Ryan Herbert, 16, had drunk at least four pints of strong cider plus shots of schnapps before they attacked Sophie, 20. It is not known whether they had taken drugs.

2009 and the number of stories dropped to 20 and in 2010 to 19. So far this year we’ve seen 29.

In all this of course, two names stand out: Melanie Phillips and Peter Hitchins, two regular opinion writers from the hang them and flog them wing of the Tory party. The articles they write are, of course, opinion pieces and not factual news reports. However, they claim to present facts to support their argument and so some of their articles are included in the summary list.

So have a look through the whole list and perhaps spend an hour or so reading the stories that have framed the reefer madness hype over the past 10 years or so. Try not to let it make you psychotic.

Gary Speed Was A Paedophile Abuse Victim

This Dispatches programme mentions that Gary Speed, like many other young footballers of promise, was placed under the control of a known paedophile. Other players who went through the hands of this known paedophile, have started talking about their abuse. A victim talking here explains how he was stuck in the situation where the abuser could get what he wanted - the acts are graphically described.

Was Gary Speed abused? It seems most likely that he was.

How would this affect his death?

Was this what drove him to suicide? Or was this what Gary wanted to tell the world about, but the powerful people involved in paedophile abuse don't want these stories to come out?

We know from the Dunblane Massacre that very powerful people are involved in such acts. Hamilton was providing kids from local schools to Labour Party cabinet-level politicians. Blair slapped a 100 year D Notice on the media to stop any reports from getting out publicly.

Gary might have been worrying the paedophile abuse network operators that he was about to make revelations. They could have decided to cut off the source before he got too famous as Wales' manager, and caused a national media sensation.

There was talk of a story about to break in the media. It is said that the story was about Gary being gay. What if that story was not about his being gay at all, but was a tale of his being abused by paedophiles. The story would not have been about to break unless Gary was cooperating. Who else could feed such revelations?

If that was the situation, he was more probably murdered than committed suicide.

In 1999, an international investigation of child pornographers and paedophiles run by Britain’s National Criminal Intelligence Service, code named Operation Ore, resulted in 7,250 suspects being identified in the United Kingdom alone. Some 1850 people were criminally charged in the case and there were 1451 convictions. Almost 500 people were interviewed “under caution” by police, meaning they were suspects. Some 900 individuals remain under investigation. In early 2003, British police began to close in on some top suspects in the Operation Ore investigation, including senior members of Blair’s government.

However, Blair issued a D-Notice, resulting in a gag order on the press from publishing any details of the investigation. Blair cited the impending war in Iraq as a reason for the D-Notice. Police also discovered links between British Labour government paedophile suspects and the trafficking of children for purposes of prostitution from Belgium and Portugal (including young boys from the Casa Pia orphanage in Portugal).

Paedophilia to become legal

Paedophiles are the next group of 'persecuted victims' that will become untouchable. Sociologists will refer to criticism of paedophiles as ignorant 'moral panic' and the public will be silenced with new diversity legislation, which all three parties will miraculously support, because they are all managed from behind the scenes. After that, with the poverty that is resulting from the Rothschilds' bailouts, parents will be expected to sell their children into prostitution, as in Thailand, so that progressive politicians like Peter Mandelson can get their hands on them.

Bad Week for Monsanto

It seems that Monsanto may be having a rough week.

Not only was the company hit by a press release declaring them the worst company of 2011, but a group of Anonymous hackers claim to have actually completely disrupted the operations of a PR firm which manages Monsanto’s own PR.

The hackers infiltrated the PR firm, known as The Bivings Group, citing “15+years of running marketing campaigns and helping some of the most corrupt corporations on the planet, as well as several governmental agencies, cover up their dirt.”

The hackers claimed to have succeeded in bringing down The Bivings Group on December 5th.

Going by information released by Anonymous, Bivings Group shut down all of their servers and liquidated their assets after the infiltration, while former employees moved on to start ‘The Brick Factory’, a new PR firm. The hackers actions are obviously driven by the PR firm’s decision to help run marketing campaigns for corrupt corporations like Monsanto.

One week after the hackers infiltrated their system, The Bivings Group reportedly stated:

Our Cyber Infrastructure has recently been put under attack. We are evaluating the extent of the intrusion, and apologise for any downtime and issues this may cause you. It is not yet determined what the motives behind the attack are, or what, if any data has been compromised. We will continue to keep you up to date, and sicerely apologise for any inconvenience.

Are the hackers in the right to take down a firm which helps corrupt corporations, even though done illegally and mischievously?

Sometimes it is hard to see what is wrong and what is right, though it is quite apparent that Monsanto is a corporation with no regard for human health or the planet. This isn’t the only example of resistance against corrupt companies like Monsanto, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Regardless of whether or not the attack will be considered to be in the right by some anti-Monsanto activists, one thing is clear: Monsanto’s own crimes against public health and the environment trump any form of cyber attack in terms of wrongdoing.

This week Occupy Wall Street has taken an interesting turn that pushes the movement in a whole new direction. Most of the original camps may have been disbanded, but it is becoming apparent that this was a blessing in disguise. If anything, the establishment should consider those original encampments a warning shot, because they were only the first phase in this new American Revolution.

After being treated like animals by militarized police for exercising their right to free speech, many of the protesters are learning that begging and pleading with this kind of corrupt organization is not going to get them anywhere. But I guess there’s nothing wrong with asking nicely first, right? That surely would be the respectable thing to do, so we can definitely understand everyone wanting to play nice at first.

However, playing nice and “working within the system” all comes to an end when the politicians are just laughing while they send in their goons to violently attack you.The only way that “we the people” will truly win this revolution is if we take matters into our own hands in a series of small battles where we call the enemies bluff every time they attempt to assert their illegitimate authority.

With that being said, it is so fitting that #Occupyourhomes has become the next step for this movement because people are simply taking back the homes that were fraudulently ripped from under their feet, instead of getting distracted with political demands that won’t do the downtrodden any good when all is said and done anyway. Getting everyone back into their vacant homes on the other hand, that is beneficial for everyone and hurts no one else in the process.

Still, the banks are becoming concerned that victims of foreclosure and community activists in dozens of cities across the country are beginning to team up to “re-occupy” foreclosed homes. Yet, it doesn't really hurt the banks though as they got the homes for nothing in the first place because they made loans out of thin air, collected all sorts of fees and payments, sold the note a thousand times, and then ultimately got the asset. What a racket!

Earlier this week, ZeroHedge reported on an exposed internal email from Bank of America which showed that the banks are extremely threatened by this recent move from Occupy Wall Street. The emails said that these protests could potentially “impact the industry.” So if it hurts them and helps expose their scam, then I would consider that a big tip that OWS is starting to move in the right direction.

This kind of direct action is the only approach that will bring us progress, the political system isn’t going to work because one of its main objectives is keep us in our place. The courts, the government, the politicians and the media have all been put here as a means to uphold the status quo and prevent any kind of change from actually taking place, so naturally we aren’t going to have any luck creating social change using these platforms.

Luckily, it seems that Occupy Wall Street is evolving to adopt far more effective tactics in taking direct action, as opposed to making political demands and hoping for the best.

In East New York, Brooklyn - a foreclosed home is being reclaimed today by a local homeless family. #OWS, along with local neighbors and community groups, has pledged to stay with the family and defend them from eviction. Kendall Jacklman from Picture The Homeless spoke to the housing crisis ongoing in New York City, saying, "There is enough housing in this city to shut down the Department of Homeless Services and offer everyone decent, affordable housing based on our real wages."

We own our homes - a callous bank that split ownership of our homes into hundreds of parts, redistributing them across the world under false ratings does not own our homes. Banks are able to restructure settlements constantly - we are not - they receive billions of dollars enabling them to stay afloat for long enough to steal our homes. Do not let them.

Across the nation occupiers along with community groups shut down foreclosure auctions and reclaimed homes for families displaced by the global economic crisis. Two homes in Atlanta were re-occupied. In Oakland, foreclosure auctions were disrupted at the county courthouse - more than a dozen homes were saved.

We stand in solidarity with homeowners across the country and the world whose homes are in the process of being stolen by faceless conglomerations motivated only by profit. We are the 99%. We will not let our homes be stolen.

The CIA has suffered a setback.

On 5th December 2011, the campaign to change Britain's unfair extradition laws scored a success in the UK parliament.

A motion calling for 'urgent reform' to the US/UK treaty on extradition was passed uncontested by UK members of parliament.

The treaty is being used to try to send Gary McKinnon, an Asperger's syndrome sufferer, to America.

Gary McKinnon is wanted for hacking U.S military computers while searching for evidence of 'little green men'.

Conservative MP Dominic Raab led the debate in the UK parliament.

He said that the motion calling for reform was about defending 'the price we place on the liberty of our citizens and the value we ascribe to that cornerstone of British justice – innocent until proven guilty.'

The motion is not binding on the Government.

Members of Parliament want changes to both the 2003 UK/US treaty and a separate extradition deal with Brussels.

The notion that any authority can determine what a sovereign human being can and cannot ingest into their own body is the very essence of control. Banning any substance from responsible adult consumption no matter how harmful should simply not be permitted in a free society.

However, certain substances are deemed so harmful by "experts" that they claim to adversely affect society as a whole and thus they're banned from the population. Of course, force of laws with guns and jails have never been able to eliminate their use throughout history. So, as a practical matter, banning any substance from society always tends to do more harm than good.

The utter failure that is the war on drugs seems to have ulterior motives besides protecting society, as evidenced by the countless harmful chemicals that are legal to consume. Marijuana is the most obvious example of a substance that remains illegal not because of health threats, or because it's a danger to society, but rather because its benefits threaten entire industries, especially Big Pharma.

If you need a fix to ease pain, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and a host of other ailments, then a legal drug dealer is happy to sell you a chemical concoction with endless side effects. Recent studies show huge spikes in psychiatric drug use, as well as addiction to prescription pain pills, yet they remain legal and doctors get incentives to push them.

In nearly every case, marijuana is a safer alternative and just as effective. When eaten or vaporized, cannabis has proven entirely beneficial as a natural alternative. Here are 5 popular but dangerous drugs that could, in most cases, be replaced by cannabis.

1. Painkillers: Vicodin, Demerol, Oxycontin, or Percodan are used to treat moderate or severe pain. They're all highly addictive and come with side effects that vary widely from stomach problems, dizziness, depression, pain and spasms, to even death. Marijuana is a proven pain reliever that takes the edge off even the most severe pain. It is not physically addictive, has very few side effects by comparison, and has never caused a single death in 5000 years of recorded use.

2. Tranquilizers: Valium, Xanax, and Ambien are examples of popular anti-anxiety drugs. All Americans will likely know someone close to them who are dependent on these drugs to cope with daily life. The side effects are similar to anti-depressants and painkillers; stomach and liver problems, depression or suicidal thoughts, dizziness and confusion, etc. Marijuana is an excellent substitute for these temporary anxiety relievers, again with far fewer negative effects.

3. Alcohol: Alcohol is the most commonly used and accepted substance for self-regulated stress relief. It's used by countless Americans to take the edge off a long work day, and also by many soldiers seeking to relieve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Alcohol is highly addictive and causes many long-term problems like high blood pressure and liver failure. Marijuana has proven to be far safer and more effective in reducing stress, especially among PTSD sufferers.

4. Anti-depressants: Prozac, Zoloft, Elavil, or Paxil are popular anti-depressants that a huge portion of the population are now dependent on. Side effects like nausea and sexual dysfunction are common, while suicidal tendencies are also increased tremendously, which seems to negate their very purpose. These selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) reduce the body's ability to produce natural serotonin and can be difficult for people to find a healthy balance once they rid the drug from their system. Marijuana, although a temporary anti-depressant, is far less dangerous and may result in instant happiness bordering on silliness.

5. Aspirin and Tylenol: These commonly-used over-the-counter drugs for minor aches and pains cause stomach problems like ulcers, liver damage, and even death. That's right, Tylenol causes about 450 deaths a year and Aspirin causes a whopping 13,000 deaths per year from sudden bleeding. Many natural alternatives can be used for the symptoms that these drugs ease, and marijuana is just one of the safer options -- with none of the damaging side effects.

As you can see, marijuana, which can be easily grown in nearly every climate, is a huge threat to these billion-dollar-a-year drugs. And this list represents a tiny fraction of the harmful pharmaceuticals that can be replaced by cannabis. To claim that cannabis is more dangerous than any of these popular legal substances is blatantly false, thus there's no reason for its prohibition other than the threat of competition to Big Pharma.

Thankfully, you're not a criminal in over a dozen states if you use marijuana in place of them. And surely, it's only a matter of time before it's obvious to everyone that marijuana users should not be labeled criminals no matter what they use it for.

‘The Pirate Bay Dancing’ Add-On Killls DNS and IP Blockades

Efforts to censor the Internet are increasing in the Western world. In the US lawmakers are currently discussing legislation (SOPA/PIPA) that could take out The Pirate Bay, or disable access to it. In several other countries such as Italy, Finland and Belgium, courts have already ordered Internet Providers to block their users’ access to the site. Demonstrating the futility of these efforts, a small group of developers today releases a browser add-on called “The Pirate Bay Dancing.”

When Homeland Security’s ICE unit started seizing domain names last year, a group called “MAFIAAFire” decided to code a browser add-on to redirect the affected websites to their new domains.

The release went viral and by now more than 200,000 people have installed the add-on. ICE wasn’t happy with this and asked Mozilla to pull the add-on from their site. However, Mozilla denied the request, arguing that this type of censorship may threaten the open Internet.

Today MAFIAAFire delivers a new release that aims to thwart the increasing censorship efforts in countries worldwide. Named “The Pirate Bay Dancing,” the Firefox add-on undoes local DNS and IP blocks by routing users through a series of randomly picked proxies.

The MAFIAAFire team told TorrentFreak that the development of the plugin was partly motivated by SOPA and PIPA, the pending anti-piracy bills in the US.

“DNS and IP blocking is probably the most dangerous part of SOPA/PIPA in terms of ‘breaking the Internet,’ so we tackled that first. We will be going after the other parts of SOPA in later releases but probably not in ‘our usual plugin form’ – the other parts require different solutions that we have already started work on,” we were told.

Although the add-on carries The Pirate Bay in its name it also works with other sites such as Newsbin2 and BTJunkie which are blocked in the UK and Italy respectively. In a broader sense it can also be used to bypass national “firewalls” such as in China, and soon perhaps the US.

Putting the add-on to work only requires two clicks and is completely free.

After the add-on is installed users can specify the websites for which they want it to work, and these sites then trigger a response from the plugin. If someone from Italy for example chooses to unblock The Pirate Bay, the add-on will save this preference and load the site through a proxy on the next visit.

MAFIAAFire is using thousands of proxies which will be rotated constantly, hence the (dirty) dancing. The current version is fully working but TorrentFreak was told that the functionality will be expanded in future releases.

The MAFIAAFire team told TorrentFreak that they were eager to help The Pirate Bay out, as the site’s operators have been an inspiration to them. The Pirate Bay team on their turn will soon feature the add-on on their homepage.

“Saving TPB was a big deal to us, we love the site and how it has stood the test of time while dozens of others fell, bent over or were run over. The MAFIAA have been trying to take down TPB’s sails for years, country by country, this extends its life a little more to give it smooth sailing,” TorrentFreak was told.

“In the bigger picture, other than the US’ SOPA we also have each country experimenting with its own mini-firewall. This makes all those blocks in all those countries, and all the millions the MAFIAA have spent to get to there, useless,” the MAFIAAFire team added.

While the latest MAFIAAFire add-on shows how easy it is to bypass these censorship attempts, supporters of the measures would argue that it will nonetheless stop the vast majority of casual pirates.

The creators of “The Pirate Bay Dancing” are not ignorant of this, but aside from delivering a working product, one of their main goals is to send a signal that censorship is never the right path to take. Judging from the recognition they’ve received so far, they sure have succeeded on that front.
